Interestingly, Firaxis also mentions "new ways to play and win, new tools to manage and expand your civilisation, extensive modding capabilities, and intensely competitive multiplayer".

Modders and multiplayer fans will be able to take advantage of an in-game community hub for playing via internet or email, and for sharing scenarios, comparing scores and achievements and accessing fan-sites. Unlike a lot of modern PC games, Civ V also promises LAN and hotseat multiplayer support, so you really can fill your boots.
Looks like more memberships for Civanon are coming!

Not sure about the switch to hexes (it's very keyboard unfriendly, which previous Civs were not), but I know I'll be there one way or the other. Civ4 is one of my all time favorite games.

If it is as good as Civilization IV our lives are over! This and StarCraft II in the same year is crazy!

They've gone hex I see, that'll be.... interesting. Still I think they've more then earned our trust over the years.

I'm all for the hexes personally. I love hex-based strategy games. I don't think I've ever had an issue playing a hex-based game on PC before.

That said, it's obviously a huge change for the Civ series. The sacred "fat cross" for a city's optimum placement will give way to a new pattern.

I like the idea of shaking it up by moving to a hex grid. Another thing with possibilities is the fact that the infantry units are represented by twelve men. That could mean a more complex combat system, or at least that units can take more incremental damage than before.

Literally, this just made my day. It's also going to drive me nuts, since the game is like 6-8 months away.

Damn, life will definitely be over when this hits. I'm all for the switch to hex. It will change the gameplay quite a bit, but I think for the better.

Being able to use long range units to fire... well... long range will shake things up a heck of a lot and in a good way. The combat has always felt strange in that regard, that after a given point the "pitch battle" style no longer fully fits the kind of units and tech involved. I'd love to be able to create a WWI kind of trench line, troops up along the front lines with an line of heavy guns behind them.

I'm also glad that one of the screen shots has the hex grid lines turned off... the change to hex is a really cool idea I just tend to not like having grids all over the place in my games heh

Awesome! One of the games I was really hoping to come along will be here by the end of the year. Maybe I can cross my fingers for SimCity 5 in 2011...

I wonder if this will link in to the facebook app in anyway? they talk a bit about new tools and the like through a community portal... it would seem odd for them not to integrate them in some way.

Exactly. I have not been this excited for a new release in years!

I am never going to graduate. Thanks Sid.

So happy. Civ IV devoured devours way to much of my time. I've finally found something to replace it with!
