Game Crazy Parent Files for Chapter 11, Closing Most Stores

While not nearly as well known or ubiquitous as competitor Gamestop, Game Crazy is still a major force in the game retail industry. At least it was until today's announcement that their parent company, Movie Gallery, would be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

As a result the chain will be closing approximately 280 Game Crazy locations, leaving only 200 stores open nationwide. This comes after they announced 200 store closings just a few months back in September. As a whole the Movie Gallery empire - which also includes the Hollywood Video from which Game Crazy sprang - will be shuttering 760 locations.

The contents of all the stores will be liquidated immediately, so bargain hunters may want to see if they can find a deal.

I like Game Crazy, they give me more for my trade-ins. Any word on which stores exactly are getting axed? I wouldn't want to see my local store closing, but if it means I can get some good deals on games...

I don't mind saying "fuck 'em." I had a bad, bad experience buying a DSi at Gamecrazy that ended with me coming in to get it on launch day, not being able to use my credit on it for a week (an employee used the credit, and the manager thought I was trying to screw them), and then coming home and opening it to find it's the store's demo unit with a broken screen. Then another situation where an employee got angry at me - ANGRY - because I said no to an extended warranty. On a DS game.

A lot of these "smaller" retail chains have already gone belly-up, and more of them are going to do so in the future. Eventually the only retail stores that sell video games will be Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and Gamestop.
