I could see it as a mode beyond Expert. You'd still have the regular five button play for all songs, old and new. However, now you'd be able to choose "Realistic" for new songs if you have the newer guitar attached.

I hope that everyone realizes that *eventually* your RB 1 instruments aren't going to be compatible. Harmonix said that they intended RB to be a platform, and they've kept their promise. RB, RB2, AC/DC pack, Lego RB, Beatles RB, and probably at least two more band-specific games. And then, of course, the weekly release of new songs for 2+ years. It has been a platform and they've supported the hell out of it. Now, I've still got my RB 1 instruments, but eventually I expect that they're going to put out some new game that doesn't allow me to use my old plastic instruments, and possibly doesn't even allow me to use the songs that I've already purchased. It's going to happen, just as surely as I've had to buy the same albums on cassette, CD and MP3.

That's not to say they're going to take away what I've got. I'll still be able to rock out with a full band of RB 2 songs on my old equipment, but I just won't be able to use it on the new game. Maybe that game will be RB3. Maybe it'll be RB4 or some other game down the line, get used to the idea now. If you want to play the latest and greatest rhythm game, eventually you're going to have to buy a new set of plastic instruments.

If they release a new Rock Band game that doesn't allow for the transferral of at least a large portion of old DLC the series will take a huge hit in popularity. This is the first generation of games that have a huge investment in DLC, and probably no game has relied as much on DLC as Rock Band. Many people have spent upwards of hundreds of dollars purely on downloaded songs. The songs are the content of the series.

If Rock Band releases a new title people might buy it just to play the songs on the disc (like Beatles Rock Band), but it's not going to replace the original Rock Band games. I know I'm not going to start buying songs that are only compatible with Rock Band 3 or 4. Once that happens I'm going to have a music game that has a library of 300+ songs. There's no way I'm going to abandon that. The latest Rock Band game that supports all that content will be my default music party game from that point forward.

The cassette to CD or VHS to DVD comparison might be comparable, but that was a long time ago and there's a different expectation for content these days. I can at least turn CDs into MP3s, and DVDs into digital movies. I haven't re-bought any of that content over again.

The only reason you should have to "upgrade" guitars would be if:
a.) the next generation doesn't support the same controllers, or
b.) you just want the new hotness.

Many signs are pointing toward DLC being forward-compatible, and it's what I expect. Microsoft would certainly lose some customers if all of this digitally-distributed content and microtransactions were invalid on their next system. I'm 90% certain that the next Xbox will be backwards compatible with all Xbox 360 games, downloadable content, and XBLA games. I expect the same from Sony. All of the content is tied to an account, so theoretically even if you aren't able to physically copy your downloads to a new hard drive (which still may be in the realm of possibility) you can still log in with your credentials and re-download every bit of it.

Maybe I'm just optimistic, but that's how I see it.

Oh, and about the harmonies: I'm thinking that they may be doing what they did between RB1 and 2 with the hammer-on chords and already coding it into the current DLC. Well before Rock Band 2 released, DLC was already being sold that had hammer-on chords programmed into them. Granted, that wasn't visible until the songs were played in Rock Band 2, but the information was there. Now, potentially, ever since Harmonix decided that The Beatles game was going to have harmonies, they could have begun charting the harmony parts into regular Rock Band DLC for use in future titles.

I'm making no promises, but it wouldn't be unprecedented.

Look, it's just simply a fact. Harmonix won't be around forever. Xbox won't be around forever. Eventually your purchased RB songs won't be supported. Eventually the hardware and software from RB will be such a constraint on Harmonix that they'll decide they have more to lose by being tied to their old work than they have to gain by continuing to support their own work.

You're still going to be able to play RB2 on an Xbox 360 or PS3 or whatever. A new game that's not compatible with RB songs doesn't take your software away. Harmonix said they'd make RB a platform to be supported for a long time and they've more than kept that promise.

And yet they will still bitch, bitch, and then bitch some more no matter what.

I really don't see the point in making the games like playing a real guitar. If I want to play a real guitar, I'll go buy one.
I play Guitar Hero (sorry, RB) because it's not like playing a real guitar. If they're going to make it more realistic, I might as well go and buy the real thing and have a skill that I can actually use in the real world.

Hey man, nobody's saying it's going to last forever. We're discussing events in the next few years, and more specifically within the next year. We're just having fun speculating, there's no need to rain on anybody's parade here.

More news about this today - from IGN, seen via Plastic Axe:
Quote:
Drake said Harrison was "speculating wildly" and while the junior Beatle was an invaluable partner on The Beatles: Rock Band he is not directly involved in Rock Band 3.
My guess is that Dhani Harrison is working on what he said, but that it's for a research project that may or may not bear fruit, and years away (like he said), while Rock Band 3 is still planned for fall 2010 or so. Of course, now I'm the one "speculating wildly".
