New Star Trek Online Trailer

There are few properties out there which are more suited to the MMO format than Star Trek. But for years it's been but the fevered dream of madmen. Until now. Or more precisely until February, when Star Trek Online launches. This trailer shows off the Space Exploration aspects of the game, with just a hint of combat tossed in. You'll be able to fight both from the comfy confines of your very own ship or beam down to the surface and engage in a little close quarters combat.

Star Trek Online will go live on the PC on February 2.

I've been doubtful about this game but the more I see the more interesting it looks. Being able to build up a crew of my own devising, even making up whole alien races, is really interesting. The combat looks like a logical (no pun intended) translation of Tank/DPS/Healer dynamics. I like the focus on reducing a certain part of the enemy's shields before nailing them with photon torpedos.

I have a few concerns. The 3D nature of space combat and flight might be unwieldy in the heat of battle. The constant phaser barrages, while accurate, look distracting. I wonder how interesting and extensive the away missions will be.

Still, I've gone from "meh" to "Definitely want to get into the beta," so that's certainly an improvement. At the very least it might be worthwhile for the first couple months, that time when all but the worst MMOs are full of wonder and discovery. If a bunch of Coggers are interested in forming a fleet I'll be there.

I want to be excited about this, but Champions burned me badly enough to wait at least a year after its release to see if its worthwhile.

I've actually gone from excited to meh. Maybe I've just been spoiled by the graphics of EvE but this doesn't look too good.

At least it's only in beta.

Did I just see the time arch from city on the edge of forever? First beam down bit in the trailer, it's right there.

I have beta access but my heatsink fell off, so a friend is playing. First day of playing he rang me the next day and complained I made him stay up to 6am playing.

I've got it preordered. I'm an unashamed Trekkie, so I'm not missing out on this. I just pray they don't screw it up.

Is it bad that I could name the classes of all the federation ships in the trailer?...

I am still waiting for my guaranteed Closed Beta slot. With such a short beta window I do hope it comes soon. Very excited about STO. Looking forward to commanding a Science vessel.

I was disappointed with the GameInformer coverage this month. He didn't even mention some of the more exciting things about the game, like ship customization and interaction with your bridge crew. Just talked about the ways it was similar to other MMOs.

Maybe he didn't get a chance to play with that part of it, but I'm not sure how much I care about hearing which configuration can be shoehorned into the healer role.
