However when it comes to an interactive media like video games I think the 3d could be used to make it all the more immersive. 3d in the past has been labeled "gimmicky" simply because it was too expensive for most people to justify. However, very soon, all new TV's will be 240Hz displays which will more than likely support the 3d tech. Then the only added expense will be to purchase enough glasses for everyone in your home.
Movies use immersion just as much as games do, that is a silly argument. Lord of the Rings, when doing its job right, makes your forget you're in a movie theater. Pretending that immersion is a game-exclusive thing is destination Crazypantsville.

And yeah, I think it will entirely be a gimmick. Basic 3D technology has been around for forever, and it is always used to throw things from the screen to your face. Which is fine for a few minutes, but moronic for a 20-hour game (if they still make those). I don't see it improving much of anything.

Avatar is promoting 3D because a few years back James Cameron made a statement that all of his future movies will be in 3D. Also I think he has money in the technology. If you guys haven't had a chance to check out the nvidia 3d glasses I recommend you do so (I think all fry's have a demo) they work pretty great.

Edit*

A good 3d movie/game won't throw things at you but rather have a depth of field so it looks like there is a world beyond the box. Good example Up, bad example any horror movie in 3d.

You're absolutely right. I realize I didn't really say what I was thinking very well. Up til now most 3d movies have been pure gimmick but there have been a couple of good ones recently.

Up is a fantastic example of how to do 3d properly. They took their regular well thought out framing and added 3d too it. They didn't move their cameras to wild angles to over-emphasize the 3d of it all.

Anyways, I still think 3d gaming could have a real chance at succeeding this time around and look forward to seeing how this pans out.

Now if I could only afford such a tv

I'm all for 3D gaming. After seeing A Christmas Carol (my first 3D movie since Friday the 13th in 3D) i'd love some 3D gaming.

Great, this is just what the world needs. Another reason to "upgrade" our TVs.

Is it 1985 again with all of this 3D stupidity? Over twenty years since the last 3D craze and we still can't do anything better than 3D? Lazy engineers.

It's crazy how people don't seem to get sick of things that are awesome and improve steadily over time

I tried the nvidia thing at PAX. While it was pretty cool, it wasn't "I need to buy a new tv for this" cool.
