Supreme Commander 2 Announced
Strategy games can be daunting. The strat-heads who know terms like Tank Rush and 4X like the back of their hands may not be intimidated, but the rank and file gamer often fears that particular genre. But that leaves developers with a quandary: make the game more accessible but in the process lose hardcore fans who decry it as 'dumbed down' or roll the dice and hope that hardcore base will be enough to float the game. That question is one developer Gas Powered Games and publisher Square Enix hope to answer with Supreme Commander 2. Set 25 years after the 2007 original, SupCom2 aims to streamline some of the economic and tech complexity and focus instead on the combat between The United Earth Federation (UEF), The Illuminate and the Cybran Nation. Combat will be waged on land, sea and air with units which gain experience and power as they progress. Supreme Commander 2 will be released for the 360 and PC in Spring 2010. |

Cappin flags since 1990.

Delicious! I read a 10 page preview of this in PC Gamer and they've really tried to fix most of the gameplay problems in the first. Mainly that it was only about the economy and how many constructions bots you could build; little about the actual strategy.

I knew about this game over a year ago. I should have spoken up when I met Chris Taylor and asked him to make it GFW - Live compatible. I bet it won't be. I should also have tried to persuade him to make Dungeon Siege III for PC and 360 instead. But, I was too shy to do so. So we end up with yet another military/scifi RTS. I think Halo Wars was enough.
Edit: Don't you dare say we would then have ended up with "yet another action RPG". You can NEVER have too many of those.

I'm a big RTS fan, but I never got much time with SC due to not having a powerful rig at the time.
I never really got into it that much as it had a tendancy to get a bit 'messy'. I will keep an eye on this one though. I did love Total Annihilation which this always seemed to follow this strain, although I do agree it was more about building a huge economy quick so you could spam forces.

Ignoring that you brought up GFWL like it was a good thing, what would an RTS be about other than a "military". As for Halo Wars "being enough" please go find yourself a corner and sit in it. RTS games have iterations from the dawn of man to the far future. It's one of the few Genres not stuck in one time zone (I'm looking at you WWII). *edit* The last part was obviously hyperbole.

I was merely suggesting that perhaps another Supreme Commander isn't the best idea. The original wasn't exactly a blockbuster. And if you're going to put the game on the 360, it's ludicrous, in my opinion, to not offer GFW - Live. No (or at least few) 360/PC dual gamers like myself would ever buy it on the PC without it. With it, I might be tempted to buy both versions, as I have for Fallout, Gears of War, and Lost Planet. Yes, I'm an Achievement addict. Sorry. They haven't really invented a cure for that yet. If you think my gaming opinions are bad, you should hear my political ones. I tend to like the things gamers seem to blindly hate, mostly out of ignorance and sheep mentality, I think: GFW - Live, and Fox News.

I used to love strat games like this.
Now though, I just see a mass of bullshit and lose interest immediately. Not knocking the game or the genre. Just seems weird how much my gaming tastes have changed since the days when SC was the rage. I just can't bring myself to play games like this anymore. |

What you mean to say is "I'm an achievement whore." GFWL is a terrible service. It was nothing but problems on DoW2 until they took everything that it was supposed to support out so the matchmaking would work. It's not "sheeple" mentality, it's passed experience. As for most people skipping the game because it doesn't have GFWL? Hahahaha. Yeah, aside from you having no basis at all, it just sounds stupid. For any genre.

You're gonna miss a hell of a lot of games if you refuse to play anything that isn't GFWL.
And the few you will have are terrible far more often than not.

Er... everyone I know that plays games on the 360/PC could give a flying crap about GFWL. If anything they hate the damned thing more than like it. Then again they realized after the first month of owning a 360 that gamer score was pointless and stupid as hell so maybe thats part of it.

I only enjoyed Supreme Commander when I had a dual monitor setup. For me, it was unplayable on a single monitor.
Since I no longer have two monitors, I'll probably pass on Supreme Commander 2.

Was a big fan of SC and SC:FA. Even upgraded my rig so I could play the second one.
It's funny how they make all the screenshots emphasizing the close ups, but of course you almost never zoom in to see that stuff. |

lolwut. Man, I had no idea SE was within 20 miles of this game.
Also, I hope skirmish is more fun this time around. Either the AI was a pushover or it brutalized you, with no middle ground, at least in my experience with it. Quote:
