While the annals of gaming are populated by a host of games crafted in basements and garages by driven individuals, modern game making has - for the most part - been possible only for the well heeled. Mod tools, Arcade platforms and Flash have made things a bit easier for the dedicated enthusiast, but it's a tough road to hoe without the tools the big boys have. That may be changing.
Epic has released their Unreal Development Kit, a free version of the very popular Unreal Engine 3 which lets any one with a PC and some drive become a game developer at home. Rather than just mod tools you get with many PC games, this is a full fledged game development suite. Animate your characters, record the audio tracks, build the terrain and design the lighting and particle effects.
Get the development kit here. You can also download demos of UDK-made games like
Whizzle and
The Ball.
