Pitchford Pitches Switch in Art Direction to CoG's Camera

At Microsoft's Pre-PAX Xbox event, President of Gearbox Randy Pitchford, played four player co-op Borderlands with Colonists Psykoboy2 and bapenguin while chatting with mightbe about the radical change in the game's art direction.

Apologies for the noisy background but the demo hallway had a bunch of great games banging out their sounds. Borderlands was already a hot title that was on the top of our list for checking out at PAX but having Pitchford take the time to answer our questions and play with us completely blew us away.

mightbe, I'm finding that completely unintelligible. Can you give us a bit of a summary?

Gearbox needs to just shut the hell up about the art style already. We get it. I don't recall seeing many people very worried about it in the first place, at this point it just comes across as overcompensation.

The gameplay is what makes me want this game like sex anyway, I'm not sure I'd even care what it looks like.

I'm really curious about how it plays, can Psyko or Bap give us any insight on that? Did you get to give it a run mightbe?

This is what makes PAX great. Developers in the trenches with gamers.

Score, guys.

Yeah. It was like sex with a beautiful woman for 12 seconds. Amazing but not nearly enough. They basically had to rip me away kicking and screaming.

I'm sorry I played it because now I have to wait two months.

I have a better video coming from the keynote as well as posters to give away of the box art.

Next week I can transcribe this if it's still a mess. I didn't have time to take it into soundbooth and keep our coverage rolling.

The entire art style switch was a coup. Pitchford refers to it as an insurgency.

The artists are now completely vertical from concept to texturing to modeling. All done by the same artist so it looks exactly like that artist conceived it.
