Damnation Development Team Laid Off

The entire team behind recent shooter Damnation has reportedly been laid off by developer Blue Omega Entertainment. According to documents uncovered by Shacknews Blue Omega was removed as developer of the game by publisher Codemasters in January. Development was then handed off to a pair of studios Blue Omega had subcontracted to work on parts of the game.

Damnation began life as a contest winning Unreal mod back in 2004, with a team eventually working to turn it into a full retail product. The game was released in May to overwhelmingly poor reviews and minuscule sales.

Damnation was on of (if not the) worst games I have played this generation, maybe it's a good thingthe developers of this game won't be making another game together.

Wasn't this game at last year's PAX? If that was the game I played, then yeah... It was pretty bad.

I just reviewed it.. and yes it was at PAX last year where I played it as well. It's not THAT bad, but the achievements are horrible. That said, it makes Prototype look like a blockbuster.

This game held zero interest for me, but I remember seeing some videos and thinking the whole verticle thing might have worked well. Oh well. Sucks when anyone is laid off, but if its really that bad perhaps it'll be an opportunity for them to seek other careers.

I'm curious as to how bad it REALLY is. It's still on Steam for 40 bucks though, so I'm not that curious.

To be honest, I still don't get how it won Something Unreal. There were far better entries that year. I played the mod version, and it simply wasn't very good.

Well, it's really quite simple... none of those others used the word Steampunk in their descriptions.

Steampunk is like catnip for geeks. The mere mention of it has us rolling on the floor purring like a chainsaw.

I don't know about that, was that the same year that Air Buccaneers (or whatever that was called) was entered? It was a multiplayer game with an emphasis on small air skiffs, that you controlled from a first-person perspective. It was still an FPS, as you'd release control of your skiff so that you could shoot at the other team, but it was really pretty interesting.

I would have liked to have seen that as a fully developed product.

Air Buccaneers was good, but at the time the Team Ariel Combat mod(s) were still being played and really the only think AB had over those mods was original artwork.

Every screenshot I ever saw of that game looked like ass. Original Xbox games looked better.
