Seven Psychopaths
I thought I knew what it was going to be going into it and I was both right and wrong at the same time. The dialogue is fantastic and Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken are near perfect. I'm surprised there wasn't a thread here already.

I'm interested in it but not theater interested. Will watch once it hits blu-ray for sure.

I just haven't had the time, and it's been out in NYC long enough that I'm afraid I won't be able to see it on the big screen when I do have the time.
![]() It was Tom Waits that sold me.

I really, really liked this. It's fun to watch a movie where Christopher Walken gives a shit.

I have a friend who absolutely hated it, and is shocked by the 85% RT score. I'm easily waiting for it to leave the theaters before I bother, but I'm really interested in giving him my own opinion of it. Can you guys give your thoughts without spoiling much? If not, I can leave the thread, no worries at all.

While I haven't seen Seven Psychopaths yet, have you seen In Bruges? It's written and directed by the same person. If you liked In Bruges you'll probably like Seven Psychopaths.

I've heard from respected sources that Seven Psychopaths is much more simple and less darkly intellectual than In Bruges. I wouldn't trust that liking one would entail liking the other in this case.

Like I said, I haven't seen it yet, but I'm fairly confident the odds are still in your favor if you liked In Bruges. This one certainly does seem to be more comedically driven, though.

It could also stack you for disappointment if you are expecting something like In Bruges from Seven Psychopaths, such as the aforementioned sources.

No plot spoilers here, just stylistic ones if that matters. Watched this earlier today at the Arclight Hollywood when my car broke down right there.
I never known anyone to have a better understanding of movies than my film Prof. Shawn Rosemheim is a genius, and he told me only half of all movies are about their subject stated matter. The other half are metaphor for either sex or movies themselves. SP is definitely about movies. It's also about LA, in a way I think only someone who has lived in Bruges can appreciate 'In Bruges'. It's also about Martin McDonagh, how he sees himself or how he thinks he's perceived after 'In Bruges'. (There's a screenwriter named Martin who is trying to overcome his one-hit wonder script, and finds himself drowning in a sophomore slump...) It's self-referential to the point that it's constantly banging on the fourth wall and destroying any suspension of disbelief. It's also feels like an early Tarantino movie, one more a collection of cool characters and dialog than it is a complete movie. It actually feels like an homage to Tarantino in any ways. I went in with high hopes and really wanted to love it, but it is a fractured, incomplete and broken experience. The first Act is fantastic, the second is solid, the third a mess with flashes echoing elements from the first two. It's weighed down by its lofty goals of moralism and introspection. It's a far cry from In Bruges, but it's watchable. I'm not going to ever invest in the DVD, but I'm glad I watched it once. It should generate interesting discussion, at least, and will probably go down as a love-it-or-hate-it. |
