Resolution-wise, sure. OS wise, no. Hardware-wise, slightly but all the same family. Tablet-wise, they continue developing for the iPad 2 (Mini is same resolution), iPad 3 and iPad 3.5 is another resolution.

Regardless, I can understand how folks feel that they're getting screwed if they bought the iPad 3 - but I don't feel screwed. My iPad 3 still works, just a slightly slower CPU. I'll live.

All of that said, in the 7" world, I won't be touching the iPad. The price compared to say the Nexus 7 is just insane. Never hurts to play on more than one platform either.

Kindle is crippled by its app store. My wife has one but most apps aren't available for it until Amazon approves them. Sure theremare work arounds but those are not user friendly.

That is entirely subjective in my mind. The Nexus 7 is more then just competition, it is the 7" tablet to beat. If Apple had priced it at $250, then I would be very tempted to at least try it out. As it stands they priced themselves out of my wallet. We have no numbers to prove that the N7 is the market leader, or that people are unwilling to pay more than the competition for an Apple product.

I was hoping for a better price on the mini. I'm a big Apple fan but I like gadgets and i've been wanting an Android tablet. Nexus 7 is at a price where I don't mind dabbling in a tablet. Will I own the next gen iPad yeah, but I love gadgets

But in order to truely take off, they need to take the "mom" crowd. Apple has the software which no other tablet comes close. Every app is made for iOS first and foremost. Software sells hardware 98% of the time.

Well they have to consider differences between iOS 3, 4, 5, and 6 depending how many devices they want to support.

Pretty sure Kindle Fire is the thing to beat. Kindle users can almost like Appleheads without the extra layer of smug.

Another catch-up-to-Android release.

iPhone 5 is an attempt to catch up to SGSIII.
iPad with Retina is an attempt to catch up to the newer uber-high-res tablets with Tegra.
iPad Mini an attempt to catch up to Nexus 7, Kindle, and Kobo.

Hell, the new Macbook is only mirroring specs on some newer stuff from other manufacturers in the Ultrabook area.

Man, I called it last year. Jobs dies, Apple goes kaput. He'd have never allowed this BS.

Well the retina display did put resolution to bed for a while. Android is just now starting to catch up. Probably no apps made for the ultra high res though either. If the rumors of the Nexus 10 are true though. It's about to get crazy up in here.

I think the real crime today is Ipad 4. Shit is so whack it should be called the Ipad 3S. Adding a new camera and a fuddy duddy propitiatory connector is no reason to launch a new system a little over 6 months out.

Apple was the first to market with a high density screen and they still have the best. There have been rumors of Samsung's 10.1" 2560x1600 tablet, but they are just rumors.

I love how they list Apples front facing camera as Facetime HD but on another page it says 1.2 megapixel. Oh you mean like on the Nexus 7 which you try to diss? Ugh... ugh... That could be more Engadget's bias than Apple Marketing. Same for battery test.
