Google Chrome or Firefox Sync?
I've been using Firefox for a long time but I am thinking about switching over to Chrome. Mostly because Chrome will sync everything. Are there many Chrome users here? What about Firefox users that sync different devices? Better yet, anyone that has tried both?
Thanks in advance for any impressions of browsers and features. |

I've got Firefox syncing to 2 computers and my Android device and I've always enjoyed it as a feature. Chrome played catchup a few versions ago.
I prefer Firefox's UI (especially its address bar) so I stick with that. Chrome appears to be faster by pulling clever tricks, mostly around prematurely loading and rendering pages (it preloads the first google result when you search for example), but I don't particularly care about that feature. I stick with Firefox. It's lighter on memory usage, is more than fast enough, and Sync works extremely well.

I love the Chrome sync. Also the search bat built into the address bar quickly became indispensable.

I switched to Chrome a while back when Firefox's memory management became god awful. They seemed to have fixed some of that. I'm 50/50 on them right now. Chrome at work and Firefox at home. I've been having a lot of stuttering issues with video playback in Chrome lately which why I switched back to Firefox for home.

I prefer chrome, seemed to more easily sync from my Windows 7 desktop to my Linux workstation, and to iPhone and iPad.

I used Chrome and Firefox on my tiny netbook and I ended up settling on Firefox. It just gives me better performance with low resources.

I had issues with Firefox some years ago but I loved it until then. Wound up installing Chrome and never looked back. I just love google search in the address bar, and I've found myself doing that at work in IE. Suffice to day, results aren't as good.

I've used Chrome to sync to my Mac, PC, idevices with no issues. I've had similar ease with Firefox though too. I mostly use Chrome but have gone back to Firefox to dabble in sometimes.

Thanks for the input guys. I will probably give Chrome a try for a week or so and see how I like it. It's not like it costs anything. I wanted to get some feedback just encase it was crap before wasting time installing it. |

Firefox sync backs-up passwords encrypted, and IIRC also enables encryption on local passwords.

Okay. I am trying to give Chrome a shot but I absolutely hate the way it handles bookmarks. It seems like a multiple step process to access them unless you use the bookmarks toolbar. Even trying to crt+shit+o for the bookmark manager is a piss poor way to handle them because you still have to have the bookmarks in the bookmarks toolbar or again, you have to select the other folders. Oh, and how the hell do you get to your default homepage without relaunching the browser?

Why do that when you can hate on something and get other people to do the work for you!

*edit 2 -bah, found how to change it to go to google. ![]() I already know how to turn on and off the bookmark toolbar and how to manage them. What I do not like is the way they implemented them if you do not wish to use that toolbar. I want an old tried and true button to push that opens the bookmark menu in a side pane. I know I can get to them by tools>scroll down to bookmarks>select the bookmark (3 steps), or ctrl+shit+o>select folder>double click the bookmark (3-steps). Give me a little credit, I did do a little reading before asking on that subject. Am I missing something on how to add them to a pane that opens on the left or right side of the browser like they do in Firefox? Last edited by rein; 10-20-2012 at 06:56 PM. |

I have a bookmark bar exactly like you describe in chrome.
Go to settings then bookmarks, add a bookmark folder to your bookmark bar. save bookmarks in the folder. Make sure Show Bookmarks Bar is checked.

Yeah, the bookmark bar is great, it is pretty much all I use for navigation these days. I'm lazy. Well, that and iGoogle, but that is going away next year goddamnit.

Close but I do not want the bookmark toolbar turned on across the top. That means I would still have to ctrl+shift+b>select bookmark folder>select bookmark doing it that way. I might just have to get used to it since I can't find an extension or anything that adds bookmarks similar to the way Firefox handles them. Like I said, I simply want a button I can hit that will open them in a pane on the side of the browser. Nothing fancy, I just want to utilize all of that real estate on the side of the screen instead of taking up more space across the top.

well, when I click on "other Bookmarks" they popup along the right side. I think there are extensions that also turn them into a little button next to settings.

You can do ctrl+shift+b to show/hide the bookmarks bar in Chrome. You till can't do this in chrome though.

Can't do what? You can add folders, icons without text, etc. in Chrome. I guess there isn't a separator, but other than that, I can't see anything in the picture you posted that isn't available in Chrome. Maybe I'm missing something.
