Well, the issue is, and you know this about me, that despite enjoying putting forth a persona of the evil math teacher (and sometimes making students think that), I'm actually a bit of a softie, to a point. Most of the time in my classes, by the end of the semester if I threaten horrible evil at them, they'll just laugh because they know it's all a joke.

And if someone has a legitimate medical excuse, I'm not going to hang them out to dry.

On the other hand, I did just recently have this exchange with a student that was hilarious in its stupidity, and I did let him burn.

In fact, maybe I'll just copy-paste the whole email exchange:

Him, sent last Monday: Mr. [my name] is there a way i can take the test ive missed? Im havin trouble getting to school in the afternoons because i had to take care of my mother. If there is please email me back as soon as you can. Thank you.

Me: You can take the test with everyone else, on Wednesday.

-Dr. [my name]

Him, on Tuesday:What about the last quiz?

Me:Could you be thinking of another class? There are no quizzes in this course. We've had the one test, and regular homework, and the second test is tomorrow. That's it.

-Dr. [my name]

Him, on Wednesday morning:Oh my fault, i thought i skipped a test thats why. My apologies, ill see you today.

Him, 45 minutes before class:Mr.[my name] i cant come into class today, have to pick up a shift at work. Anytime tomorrow morning i can take the test please?

Me, later that night:It is unfortunate that you were unable to attend the test this evening. Unfortunately, I am unable to give you a makeup exam. I suggest you concentrate on the remaining homework assignments and upcoming exams.

-Dr. [my name]

Him:Alright than. Thanks but i have a question, where did you post the test score from the first test?

He's not the first person to ask this. The other person who asked something like this got a response like, "I didn't think it was necessary to post the scores to the test since I've been bringing them with me to class every day since you took the first test. So if you'd been to class since the first test..."

I also had dreams that he'd eventually pick up on me signing my emails "Dr." and stop calling me "Mr." I usually try not to be a bitch about it, but he doesn't win any points by calling me the wrong thing.

I like helping you melodramatically draw out your evil persona as unlikely real it is Part of that fun is knowing you are not at all like that.

As for the student in the spoiler...oy. I hate to say this but the student needs to choose his priorities. I'm guessing he's not older than 22.

Also, you earned the respect to be called your title. I know you don't like pointing out your title since you are rather humble. At least he could call you professor which is a generic name I thought almost all students used.

If he really wants to make up the test, maybe he wouldn't mind be a "test" subject

You should. Sometimes it feels like I'm just ranting into nothingness. I tell myself that it's really just a project my wife and I are having fun with, and act like there's not really an audience. But I can't help but watch to see how many hits it gets.

I want to have some sympathy because he sounds like he's having some trouble. But people need to show some level of giving a shit about the class for me to be willing to go out of my way for them. The exam schedule is on the syllabus, which was handed out in class and is also up online (and I've been talking about it in class for weeks). So there's absolutely no reason the timing should be a surprise.

Technically, I'm not a professor, not anymore. Professor is a job you have or you don't. I'm only an instructor. Then again, at this school, they don't seem to have the professor designation.

I think the first thing I would do is take away the ability for them to speak.

Why does this remind me of a Twilight Zone episode. Speaking of which, you would make an awesome TZ character. Both good and "bad" character.

Your MMP persona would be fun short stories. Now if I wasn't so lazy I would write a few...

You do of course realize that's more or less what the blog is? It's 90-95% fiction, with a loosely planned storyline running throughout. The emails I've received and posted are totally genuine, though. Benefit of having known angry people in grad school

fred,

I passed your post on the cell phone user to my Dad, who is a now-retired biochem prof, and I suspect he'll pass it on. You may have some new fans up here.

Thanks, I hope. I'm always a little paranoid I'm going to get in trouble adopting the persona of basically a cranky old professor (with a little bit of a supernatural angle), even though I don't have much personal experience in it. If people start reading and commenting who have been through it more than I have, I hope I can keep up.

No games.
Found out we have a local person who will make mountable glass poker cards for our KickStarter as well as the metal ones. Excited to work with them.
I haven't played pretty much anything since the disappointment of Dishonored.

I just popped in a movie, my first experience with Coffin Joe (At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, aka À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma). In its first ten minutes I think I'm in love. It's just so insane. There's this argument centered around eating meat on Holy Friday that veers into threatening cannibalism and inviting The Devil to dinner, and culminates with the guy eating meat at his window and laughing as a church procession walks by. If it can keep up this momentum, I'm going to need to find more of these.

In ten minutes, I'm suddenly a fan of Brazillian horror.

The Last Remnant - about 8 hours in and I think I like it. It's different and not at all what I expected but it's holding my attention fairly well.

Torchlight- finally wrapped the main quest. Starting the Shadow Vault. Still plugging away.

Just Cause 2 - played a bit on PS3 and thought it was okay. Came with the Square bundle that Amazon was doing so I loaded it up and I still think it's okay but finding controls with a k/m worse. Fun as a time-waster but it's not doing a lot for me still.

Debating loading up Amnesia for Halloween and trying to get through it. I've started 3-4 times now and got about 3 hours in before succumbing to boredom and uninstalling. Would like to power through and beat it but lack motivation.

Yay, someone else playing TLR!

One of these days I need to go back and finish my 100h+ playthrough.

I've been playing more Wizardry 6. I'll do a full report later. Also finished my first base assault in XCOM.

It's on Netflix. The other movies of the Coffin Joe Trilogy don't seem to be available there. It looks like the UK put out a nice box set of the older movies, but no such thing exists domestically.

Purple...what is a keeper? I just beat Dishonored and don't know what you're talking about. Oh wait, you mean a weeper? I know what a weeper is. I don't kill them, I usually go around them.

Got the good ending. The last few levels I really liked. There were a few levels that started to threaten my tempo with the game but overall it was a great great game. Thief's spiritual successor. I also love the art, as many "textures" look like they were painted in watercolor or something if you look closer. Like wood grain. Next time I play it I will do the high chaos route as some scenarios change dramatically I saw online. And killing would be so much more fun and easier. Not as much reloading.

Not sure what to play now. I am all alone in the house for the night so I want to play something but I need to dig through my catalog I guess.

The Plan™ for this weekend:
  • Nieces' soccer game - It's the last game of the year and I plan on shouting myself hoarse. I love cheering for my girls. Plus, I'm proud of the fact that I've been able to resist being one of "those guys."
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown - I need to finish updating my playthrough thread.
  • Borderlands 2 - Playing my Mechromancer and keeping an eye out for Shift codes.
  • The Waiting Game - C'mon Newegg, hurry up!

I finally placed my last order of parts with Newegg. Should have a spanking new PC by the end of next week:
Radeon HD 6950
COOLER MASTER RC-692A-KKN5 case
GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 mobo
AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 8-core proc
Crucial Ballistix 8GB RAM - more to be added later
LG DVD-RW SATA
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M700 Power Supply
OCZ Agility 3 120 GB SSD

That's because kids are stupid.

Anyway, I was going to catch up on some TV that's on the DVR, but the satellite is jacked. So I'll probably continue Gay Tony. I'm hoping to finish that up before Assassin's Creed 3 drops.
