It sucks when people cancel, but how many backers to those Kickstarters only know about the site because of a bigger project? How much money would they have raised if the Kickstarter games section was only pulling in $3 million total this year instead of over $30 million?

A big project isn't taking from smaller ones if they bring in more backers to the system that end up spending money that wouldn't have been in Kickstarter otherwise. But most new backers probably aren't sending e-mails to people saying "I joined Kickstarter because of World of Darkness and then I saw your project so I'm backing that now, too."

Sounds like a good opinion I will pass it on. Its a good point to just assume all those people are flighty or a majority and could be possible. BY the way by saying I will pass it on...I will not be calling them entitled whiners with low or lesser than exciting projects.

I don't think a path of worrying about having no controls on an airplane is a bad thing. But thats me.

It seems we are at an impasse and I will move on. But I will take everyone ideas and opinions and pass them on! Thanks all!

Karak, I am curious to see these forums you mention. I'm not going to go there to argue with them, just read what they're saying.

So are the Kickstarter creator forums limited to just people who are running Kickstarters?

I didn't even know you could cancel. I haven't donated to Obsidian yet cause I don't know which package I want. If I donate, I'd rather be certain.

Because of them though I created a account. And I already backed another project first. So there is merit to what ink is saying. But I get how the trend changes with something small. But what if some small stole your thunder. Would yall still be mad.

I think Obsidian did need money. You may not think so but they can't make the games they wanted to. They've been stuck in the publishers cycle. Fargo couldn't make anything let alone wasteland 2. Same for the Shadowrun guys.

Wait, White Wolf is just doing a KS to reissue the old books? Seriously? Is there more to it than that, or just the old books?

Because if that's the case, that's a whole different level of... I'm not sure what... than old creators making something new that apes/mimics/is comparable to what they did back in the day. It would be like Double Fine doing a KS to rerelease Psychonauts as is.

I'm guessing it's this one.

Quote:
Werewolf: The Apocalypse – 20th Anniversary Edition brings the entire World of Darkness experience full circle and will serve as the perfect anniversary milestone to celebrate two decades of gaming the epic sagas of the Garou.

What’s in it?

• All thirteen original tribes, tribe variants and Lost Tribes, with their signature Gifts and Rites updated from the Werewolf: The Apocalypse Revised tabletop rules.

• Rules for character creation and advancement.

• Gifts from level one through six, including expanded lists.

• Updated setting to the modern nights.

• New full color original art by Ron Spencer, John Bridges, Steve Prescott, Dan Brereton, Richard Kane Ferguson, and other classic “Apocalypse” artists, as well as classic B&W pieces carefully chosen from the earlier editions.

It's not just a reissue. They've already done that through POD on DTRPG.

W20 is a revised and expanded release of the original oWoD Werewolf, with all the rules in one place and cleaned up, just like they did with Vampire 20th recently.

Why they're doing a Kickstarter, I'm not clear, maybe they didn't think the fanbase was enough to rely on pre-orders like they did with Vampire, but it's more than just a straight reissue.

Hmm... That doesn't leave quite the same kind of bad taste in my mouth, but it being on KS still seems a little hinky.

White Wolf may be a big name from the old days of RPGs, but the bottom line, they're still a company that's barely a line item on the books at the people who make EVE Online, a game that's niche even in the MMO genre, albeit a relatively successful niche.

They haven't been one of the big boys in a long time, and so it's not surprising if they needed a little extra cash to make this happening, especially when CCP hasn't exactly been doing great recently itself.

What bothers me more about it is the ludicrously high buy-in needed and the convoluted as hell reward levels.

When you need a fucking chart just to explain how your shit works, you fucked it up.

No kidding. I think I gave up trying to parse their reward system after the $35 level or so

I actually do want this game, but I suspect I'll just wait for the PDF release or something and buy it for normal price.

I hate Kickstarters that inflate the price of reward levels above the release price of the game. If anything, I think backers should pay LESS, not more.

I don't see people cancelling their pledges as stealing when the big boys come around, but I just don't see why people feel the need to 'pledge all or nothing'...some of the reward tiers are crap, and when a project seems to be rocky on its legs, you'd think 'Hey, look, I was gonna pledge 100 bucks, but this just got announced, and I'd really rather but a bulk of it towards that. But I believe in your project, so I'm keeping a 10 dollar pledge'

Are people really THAT stingy with their money? Or am I just really terrible at budgeting?

Also...

35 bucks for the WtA PDF? I loved those book, and bought them all years ago(Even the Changing Breeds/Races books with other Were races)...and even I think it's bullshit to ask so much for a PDF.

If it were a print book? Yeah. That's how much my originals cost each. But a PDF? For a kickstarter? Ugh.
