My life for Aiur!
|
When I got the email I was meh, but I clicked on the link. The author list surprised me a fair amount. It is supported for the Kindle, so that may be where I send these. Very cool.

They definitely caught my interest with the list of authors, especially Doctorow.

If you like sci-fi at all and haven't read Old Man's War, this should be the only excuse you need.

Yep, followed by The Ghost Brigades, The Last Colony and Zoe's Tale. I haven't read Zoe's Tale yet, but the other two are also excellent.

Looks like e-book publishers might be returning some of the money customers spent on their books. I got an email notification from Amazon about it. Not sure how much it'll amount to, but anything is better than nothing. And I'll just turn around and spend it on more books anyway

Humble Bundle adds the first two Penny Arcade and SMBC collections, and the first xkcd collection. If you payed over average before you get them anyway.

I went to the library and picked up Boneshaker and Anthem.
Trying to decide which to read through first, I'm guessing it will be Boneshaker. The description sounds great.

I got about half-way through Boneshaker before giving up. The writing didn't do anything for me nor did the story. Can't comment on Anthem though.

Damn, I did the same thing. It's like the worlds most padded short story.
Sent from a phone, so all the words are tiny.

Boneshaker just doesnt seem to be grabbing my attention, so I'm starting Anathem.
I may go back to it at a later date, but I also have Old Man's War coming, so it wont be anytime soon

Anathem was pretty rough for me. It takes SO LONG to get really started, then it hits all at once in the last 1/4 of the book. I'm glad I stuck it out, but it wasn't easy.

I wasn't as in to old man's war as I was expecting. Loved the concept, and then it was all "oh. Oh ...oh. Well, alright."

The First Law trilogy
The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, The Last Argument of Kings Outside of the Mistborn series this is one the best realized trilogies I have ever read. Abercrombie had a clear plan and flow for the story. That's not to say it didn't muddle along at times in book 2 and 3, but overall a very cohesive plot that ended the only way it could. Also of note, there are no good guys here. All types of moral grey characters and some that are simply less evil than the other guy. One of the most empathetic characters is a torturer. Currently Reading: Empress - Karen Miller |

I finished the second Dresden book, Fool Moon. It was better in every way. Butcher had more command over his narrative, the characters had better motivations and OH GOD THE LOUP GARROU. Perfect mixture of adventure and violence.
I am now reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell at home, which is quite fantastice, and Haruki Murakami's short-story collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman during commute. I find i prefer one translator's work(Jay Rubin) over the other. The language is more eloquent, exciting and beautiful there.
