Unreal Tournament 2004

On the PC Gamer podcast this week they discussed UT2K4 and it got me craving some UT. Would anyone be into throwing down some?

Man, if I blocks of time I could set aside, I would totally be down for some...even horde mode (or whatever it was called back then) which I adored.

Man, that's tempting. I don't know how hard it would be to find my discs and get it installed and patched, though. :/

I am braving the 5 CD installation right now! Searching for all the patches and community packs! I am excited.

It's on GOG.com for $10, if you don't feel like dealing with CDs.

Honestly I think doing the CD-swap install was part of the fun. Now if only I could connect to a server....

I have UT2004 on steam. just click dl and go and I could play.
my biggest issue would be when to sit down and do it.

This was the shit back in the day. It certainly beat the pants off the disappointing 2003 version, and Onslaught mode was a LAN party regular for my buddies.

I am in. Have to jump through some hoops to install on OS X now that Mountain Lion doesn't support PPC binaries (UT2004 has no x86 installer, sadly) but you can turn the 2k4 demo into a retail version using the GoG copy http://lowetechlabs.com/UT2004-WIN2OSX/

I'm just going to install a Snow Leopard VM really quick and copy the app folders over from there once patched.

Haven't played in ages. Fond memories though. Wasn't big on UT99 or 2003, but 2k4's more Quake-like physics and such helped a lot. Also Deathball was the bomb.

That's funny, I remember loving 2K3 and thinking that 2K4 was exactly the same, but with added content.

2003 was an improvement over 99 for sure, but 2004 was the "well, I know like Unreal Tournament" moment. Until then it was all Quake 1 (MegaTF) and 3 for me, aside from CS and DoD.

Well, you mentioned "more Quake-like physics", but I thought for sure both games use the exact same engine.

I think I have the most recent patch and all the bonus content packs (1, 2, Editors Choice) but I am having trouble joining servers.

Voodoo had a great thread on how to bypass CD swap altogether, but it seems to have been lost somewhere.

I felt, among other things, that Onslaught was a huge addition. Other games may have had vehicles before 2K4, but none of them had a 1-seater hovercraft you could squish opponents with. 2K3 was decent but felt too barebones IMO. 2K4 was the meat.

I've actually got this on Steam. A few games would be fun.

I was pretty impressed with Onslaught. It was just perfect joy. Some great maps as well.

I did enjoy some Onslaught. And I did enjoy all the extra content from 2K4. I just am surprised that people were disappointed with 2K3, because I wasn't at all, and expressing doubt that the engine was any different.

Anyway, I'm not mad or anything. Just talking.

Oh, I enjoyed 2K3. I think I still have the discs, but I still bought 2k4 first day and never played 2k3 again. 2K4 just put the polish on it.

I think there were complaints at the time about it being more of an expansion than a true sequel, yada yada.

Well, yeah, that was a thing. 2k4 was basically just a super set of 2k3.

I also bought 2k4 day one, preordered in fact, which indicates how much I loved 2k3.
