Really though, this is not a scam, people know the MSRP and are willing to pay above it despite this fact. They could wait a couple months, if that, and just get one at regular price. If it's taking advantage of anyone, they are ALLOWING themselves to be taken advantage of, knowing full well as they pay up. A Wii U is not a necessity, so it's not like gouging for food or medicine. Is its sleazy? Sure. But our "need it now" consumer culture means there will be people willing to shell out to get it not matter what. If my kid wanted one badly, I still wouldn't pay $800. I'm not dumb. But there are MANY people out there that are.

The console "scalpers" don't bother me, but ticket scalpers can die in a fire. I hope there's a special place in hell for the jerks who buy up lots of concert/theatre tickets and then sell them online for 3+ times the original price. I would not hesitate to spit in their faces.

Considering Amazon isn't doing preorders, I just plan on getting on there the week of release and ordering one, pretty as you please. I don't see a whole lot of reason not to expect to be able to do so.
If I have to, I'll wait a week. But I'd be very surprised if Nintendo doesn't make sure that a WiiU is available to everyone who wants one by the holidays. |

The issue with stock that I see is that there's going to be good percentage of the units available that are for an SKU very few people want.

Which? The one with the shitty game, or the one with the shitty internal storage?

For me, the 32GB model clearly represents significant value over the 8GB model. I mean, while I would be interested to know what speed tests would say about read times of the internal flash memory versus SD cards or USB HDDs, I would assume that the internal flash memory would be faster. So, since the internal flash memory is completely non-upgradable, it would be best to get the unit with as much internal flash memory as possible. And $50 isn't really that big a difference.

I'm interested in the 32GB model for the discount on digital downloads. Living in India, I doubt I'll be able to pick many retail copies.
I expect I'll plug in a hard drive day one for storage.

The thought of plugging in a 3TB drive just makes me so happy. Microsoft really let me down with the 16GB limit on the 360. I've been loving running my Wii games off USB, as it really simplifies things.

Region locking pretty muc makes this a no go for me. Even if they do digital rease day and date with retail, I'd not be able to just fake a US account like I did with the Vita. This means US system, US account, games and stupid point/credit card work arounds. I'd also have to give up on my current library of games.
The alternative is an almost $600 system and games which run $90-120 for domestic Australian release. |

People who do this are bad for the industry(and any other industry) and it is why you see limited quantities imposed on many purchases. Namely so that it isn't trivially easy to make a business out of hijacking supply and holding it for ransom.

Well, especially since units that are in the hands of resellers are usually not accompanied by the purchase of any software. Once they are resold then it's OK but as long as they are held by the reseller (because the resell price is too low or, alternatively, because the resell price shows promise of increasing) then the worse it is for Nintendo and the publishers releasing games for the system. But it's pretty much a fact of life for hardware manufacturers these days.

I do not care what other people do to earn money by taking advantage of new console releases or clearance items but I do not want to see those same people bitching about Gamestop practices. After all, they would only be giving those trade-in values and reselling them at those high prices if customers are willing to accept it.

I think the biggest complaints about Gamestop are from within the industry, rather than consumers. Publsihers and developers, though, have no problem giving more and more of their business to the retail chain regardless. I think it was all a ploy to make people believe that entering 19-digit strings while playing console games is a good idea.

Dropping this here since apparently it hasn't been acknowledged or heard about yet. Especially since it was made out to be such a big deal in this thread.
Yes, I realize I'm necro bumping. Sorry for that and all good chaps but I do feel it is relevant to what was being discussed earlier. Consider it informative. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/1...h-of-a-second/ |
