Same Name, New Genre

Take an intellectual property and describe a new video game title you'd like to see in a genre it hasn't been applied to yet.

For instance, while Mario has been thrust into every genre from sports to racing to FPS, I think it would be fun to have a Mushroom Kingdom management sim. It would be somewhere between a God sim and Majesty, where you develop the kinds of "worlds" you typically find in a Mario game (Desert, Ice, Clouds, Etc) and set up structures populated by Toads and other residents.

Occasionally Bowser or another villain would cause some mischief and Mario, Luigi, or other heroes would show up, taking advantage of the structures you've made to overcome enemies and challenges.

I have long (well, since Oblivion anyway) wanted to see Bethesda apply the TES/Fallout3+ mechanics to a four-color superhero world. Yeah, I know, not quite what you wanted.

Sounds interesting. Can you explain a bit more about how it would play?

Played Skyrim or Fallout 3? Like that, except with superpower skill trees and combat and a lot of breadth in character design. This isn't a detailed idea, even if it is an AWESOME idea.

I'd like to see something set in the StarCraft universe. But, some sort of a stealth/shooter type thing. You could play as a ghost.

Or... OR... a graphic adventure game set in the WarCraft universe. Maybe take on the orc side of things.

So an open-world action-RPG superhero game not tied to an existing license?

World of Warcraft... as a Dungeon Keeper clone. I want to build the instances, build the lairs for monsters / villains build oddly specific rooms / item combos to lure in powerful "bosses" and then have "raids" of heroes try to storm the dungeon. I think it would be oddly satisfying. And if they had the right sense of humour after every time you destroy a raid you'd get the stats like how high their repair bill was and stuff like that.

Dwarf Fortress as an FPS/TPS, I want to explore vast, sprawling, HORROR-FILLED, abandoned fortresses. Ideally from the first person with almost an Aliens vibe to it given the engraving. If you have read the saga of Boatmurdered and didn't want to explore every inch of that hellscape then I don't know why I'm talking to you.

I know it's bending the rules a little but I'd really like to see a game build on the Black Company book series. Either as a slimmed down squad based RTS like CoH or Dawn of War or even as an MMORPG. Hell, even as a Skyrim clone it would probably be amazing.

Flavor and licenses don't much interest me, I'm all about the game play. I hadn't imagined a license, but feel free to insert one of your choosing.

Heh. That could be great if it's a satire like you suggest. That seems kind of what Ubisoft is doing with that "Quest for Epic Loot" game, or whatever it's called. Obviously not with the Warcraft license, though.

That's not bending the rules at all. The IP you pick doesn't have to have been a game already. A tactical fantasy game with a darker angle to things could be really interesting.

I'd like to see some MMOs turned into single player games, if only so I can play through their main narrative in a reasonable amount of time (30-40 hours, but even that's lengthy for some).

It refers to the old four-color printing process for comics. Not sure of the exact range of time it encompasses, though.

Yeah, I'm referring mostly to the bright primary-colorness of it. Think Freedom Force: The Elder Scrolls.

Cool, thanks.

I'm trying to think of a cool original idea that Blizzard hasn't already scrapped.

I'd like to see a god game done as an Bioware-style RPG.

I'll leave exactly how that would work to your imagination.

I always wanted to see StarCraft made into a MMO RTS hybrid. Kind of like Natural Selection or Battlefield where you have commanders who set objectives for groups of players and they have to fight the war in a massive PvP battle.

I picture each race being very different. Terrans being all about job specializing with no solid skill tree lineage like the old Star Wars MMO (so that people could easily hybridize). Vehicles would be something you purchased and maintained. Zerg would be gear dependent with a focus on using DNA from kills to craft mutations. You could tell a high level zerg just by how crazy their mutations looked. Protoss would be very traditional RPG with heavy cast system. Strict class system with specializations at the end.

You would have your character growth as described above and then your battlefield growth separately. Your ranks in battle would of course depend on your accomplishments. It would be a very PvP heavy game. As you rank up you would get access to commanding small NPC squads that follow you around (probably no more than 5). This way battles get super bulked up. I envisioned many warzones being semi-unexpected and could happen anywhere that was tactically sound for one side. A zerg warzone drops on a major Terran city and all the factions get a 10 minute warning to get their asses over there and join the fight. Off planet? Better get drop podded. Bring the cruisers.
