Violator is one my favoritest CDs ever. I believe it played on repeat in my car for about a year.

Thank you! Although I have to say, I've found most of the lists here to be quite good. Just not music that was around when I was in my teens, for the most part.

This. Depeche Mode is in my top three favorite bands of all time and are still the only real thing I get excited about when it comes to new music releases. I got a CD player put in my first car and then immediately went to a pawn shop and bought Violator. Who knew that an album that has songs that are nothing but illusions to sex and drugs could feel so important?

Violator is indeed a wickedly good album. I still can listen to the entire thing over and over to this day.

The Cure's Disintegration had a really powerful effect on me as well, due mostly to user error. For folks that know the album, the first track, Plainsong, starts with very quiet wind chimes for about twenty seconds. Not knowing this, I thought something was wrong with my stereo, so I kept turning it up...and up...and up...and then was literally smacked in the face by the sonic boom of the huge cymbal crash and gigantic bass chord and the swelling synths. It made me fall backwards in shock, and just oggle at the speakers for a full minute while Robert Smith crooned his way directly into my nervous system.

Definitely a awesome moment in my young life and a defining moment for my musical tastes.

Jesus. I just realized I *saw* Depeche Mode before many of you were even born.

Why do I say that? Because anyone that says Violator is their best record is too young to know better.

You little boy, you have no idea what that meant to us back in the day. It was revolutionary!

But that was funny and clever. muddi, I'm beginning to dislike you less.

I have some of their older stuff which I very much like. I considered including Music for the Masses on my list, but Violator is a better album. Anything older was before I was a teenager.

And I do think Violator is their best album, but quite frankly, everything they do is great.

Not a big fan of the band as a whole, but that track is amaaaaaazing. They do a serviceable cover of Paint it, Black, but I enjoy Echo and the Bunnymen's take on it a lot more. That's another band that I listened to all the time in high school. Man, I really don't touch much of this stuff anymore, but it is still great music.

All that said, a girl I live with loves the band and she isn't that musically diverse, so I don't think they are THAT unheard of in the US.
Ya they always stayed dope even after my teen years. I'm not a huge fan either but I am a fan still. They make some good music. Jeff Martin reminds me of Jim Morrison for some reason. This is probably my fave Tea Party song.

See, Full Moon Fever is special for me because it's not only the first album I ever owned (I got it years before I bought Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt on my own) but my Dad gave it to me. I listened to it over and over and over...dunno whatever happened to it, but man I loved the hell out of it.

But you've got great taste! That Huey Lewis album was the bomb. So was the Pink Floyd album. I think I wore that tape out.

One of my first shows ever was ZZ Top. A few years ago, I took my son to ZZ Top for his first big rock show, and just a couple of weeks ago, I went and saw them again. Yeah, you and me are friends too.

Also, Pink Floyd, while not on my list of influential teenage records, is easily one of my favorite bands of all time. There are very few bands that I can say that so definitively about, so that just means they are spectacular. I once tried to cross the Canadian border illegally to go to their concert. I didn't make it

Oh man. Pink Floyd. I could imagine a computer program that would mix all of David Gilmore's guitar riffs in an endless stream and I would be happy. I was convinced they would get back together for a special millennium concert tour. Don't know why but I was looking forward to it. Alas.

If we included college years, I would have to include Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream. Something about this album affected me more than any other. Probably coincided with changes in life and attitude that comes from being in college. One of my favorite albums. Corgan still sang with a softer voice on most of the album, which I liked more than the more grating quality he could have.

When I was working on Xbox cert we had a large turn over of staff for standard testers. One morning there is some new kid and he's wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt. We got chatting and I discovered I had seen Maiden live before he was born. That made me feel properly old.
A few months ago I was getting hit on at a rock night by a cute young blonde. Turns out that not only had I seen Maiden, and other bands, before she was born; I'm also older than her father. I beat a hasty retreat.

Heh. I was VERY flattered, to be sure, but I'm happily attached to Mrs Squid, and not keen on girls. I likes em matured.
