Next song up was Goldfinger's cover of 99 Red Balloons, easily in my top 2 favorite covers of all time. ( Alien Ant Farm Smooth Criminal probably being number 1). Now Dropkick Murphies are playing, a predictable but solid choice.

I'm in audio heaven. Considering I can never think of what I want to listen to, this option is flawless.

I've only ever driven one automatic and I hated it. I drove my dads Pajero to his new place for him. It's like riding a bike with training wheels...it's easy, but it's boring as Hell.

Driving manual is about as close to automotive erotica as I get. There is something about feeling so connected, so in charge of a vehicle that you control every aspect of its movement. Driving automatic is the equivalent of fucking a corpse.

Especially when driving through a hilly or mountainous area.

That's why I prefer my Hyundai's Shiftronic transmission. No clutch, but I still can choose when to shift for acceleration or increased braking.

Hilly and mountainous areas are exactly why I love having a manual transmission. Traffic or not.

My Jeep has hill-assist technology which holds the vehicle in place immediately after releasing the brake (supposed to make hill starts easier) but I found that shit annoying and turned it off. You auto-tranny pantywaists might have liked it.

Actually the systems on high-end cars are nearly as good as manual transmissions, so i have hope

Who is offroading with automatic? Well, a lot of 4x4 guys do actually. The actual hardcore rock crawlers do it. Put your transfer case in 4LO and it will move at 1 MPH on its own.

But mine is a standard. I'm not a hardcore rock crawler, but I do offroad from time to time.

A good many British and American off-roaders come standard with automatic transmissions. Usually they have controls for the gear box though, for when you need more or less torque, etc.

Also, most high-end paddle shift systems are essentially shift-tronic type systems now. IIRC, Ferrari is even putting full on automatic mode in some of their cars now. When the computer can shift faster than a human can blink, the existence of a manual control is mostly for stroking the traditionalist ego at that point.

I prefer the control available to me to slow my car down without brakes or get up to speed quicker for a highway entrance. It's also proven that most manual transmissions (driven properly) provide better gas mileage over all but the most advanced auto transmissions.

I definitely wish for the instant response of a manual when accelerating, but you can still drop many automatic cars into a lower gear for going down long hills, etc.

I had to have my car in first gear going up and down Mount Washington last month. It was a requirement. I had never heard so many cars go so slow and be so loud.
