Sigh. The actual phrase is "this piques my interest." I endorse pedantry, but make sure you are correcting people correctly.

I know that police have the capability to track a phone via cell towers, but why would they? As a general rule, if someone gets a threatening text message from a phone number, that text message was sent by the phone's owner. If he "conveniently" claims to have lost his phone, the cops are going to view that excuse with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Frankly, I'm not sure the cops could conduct such a search legally. In order to demand cell phone tower data, the police have to swear out an affidavit that they have probable cause to believe the data will be evidence of a crime. But 99 times out of 100, the cell phone data would not back the owner's claim of having lost the phone, because the owner would be lying. Maybe the owner could consent to the search, but the underlying assumption here -- that the tower data is going to reveal the location of some other person -- would render that consent irrelevant. Actually, I think this case would make for an interesting appeals process... which is a very lawyerly way of saying, "Shit done be all fucked up."

I think he was saying that the use of either "peak" or "peek", as opposed to "pique", bugs him.

Absolutely, but remember that according to his own story the police already called and talked to him, to which he taunted them and hung up. That's the extra step I could see pissing them off enough to bother with a trace. There's pretty much no way they would bother tracing for the text alone. I know some police officers who would take the verbal taunting as a challenge.

Of course, I can also see it going the way you described. There are a lot of factors we don't know. I just prefer to think that someone that mean-spirited and idiotic to boot will get their comeuppance. Helps keep the voices in my head in check. For now.

That one falls into the ever-growing family of "I know it sounds like that, but you're still wrong" internet misspellings.

I know this was already mentioned, but I'm going to personally come through the internet and start murdering people if I keep seeing "loose" instead of lose. Most internet misspellings give me a headache, but that one takes the cake. Not only is it wrong, they're actually increasing the size of the original word.

The last time I took the chance to read the comments on a YouTube video, I spent 15 minutes clutching my English degree and sobbing.

I grew up around enough rednecks that I've been rendered immune to the dreaded Y'all. If I hadn't, I would likely have been dead long ago, Scanners style.

As long as the voices don't tell you to violently rape all of us to death, I'm good.

We don't want a repeat of last year.

I can't seem to figure out how someone could make those two words sound the same.

...well, unless they pronounced both as shu'ers.

Presumably that's when you get so frustrated it begins to fluster you (or perhaps the other way around). Is just a portmanteau is all.

I've noticed my frequent replacing of "it's" with "is" has found its way from my talking to my typing. I wonder if that is any internet person's pet peeve?

"Shutters" and "Shudders" do sound the same. I guess it depends on how rigidly you pronounce your T's.

Maybe it's a regional thing, but we pronounce our t's and d's almost identically in many words. I think it's because we tend to almost roll the hard t sound into a d, so it's actually kind of both. Welcome to the Midwest.

I've already stood on my soapbox once in this thread, so I'll just say that I'm going to be fucking dead if this ever happens. Thank goodness its just the inane ramblings of English majors and highly opinionated internet nobodies.
