I'm crazy for wanting reality in my non-reality TV? BTW, they've got some awesome looms hidden away somewhere, judging by the quality of the weave in their obviously new clothing. Speaking of clothing, I can't even see the stitching in any of their leather-crafted items.
Lastly, 15 years without electricity, nothing anybody wears is going to be spotless much longer than a day or two after it is made. Washing clothes the old-fashioned way is hard work. Hopefully all of this is just because it is a pilot made on a shoestring.

I think your expectations are too high, you're not gonna get that sort of grim reality outside of HBO.

I don't see any reason to use the setting if you're not going to use the setting. The only problem they seem to have with no electricity is that they can't update facebook from their cellphones while driving to the mall.

People without electricity seem to have basic hygene figured out, if that's your problem Random. Still doesn't explain the exquisite skin.

I wouldn't take it to the lengths Random is, but I do agree that it's a bit jarring. It's not like things need to be ultrafilthy, but she's wearing a perfectly fitted midriff shirt and when they introduce "Nate" you can't help but notice how his shirt is flawless.
Even if it's just a patched elbow or something, give the clothes some character. |

Agreed. And magic pendants? Nope. I'm out.

Anyone watch this? I tried a little but couldn't get into it. Things seemed a little too neat to be post apocalyptic. I guess since the hunger games, the choice of characters seem to be limited to female archer girl and star crossed lovers. The big mystery is why the power went off but if this is anything like lost they'll never really explain it anyways.

I'm just 10 minutes into the first episode. I will probably give it a fair shake.

I'm assuming there will be an explanation why no one has firearms (at least in the first 10 minutes or so). Since casting bullets etc. doesn't require electricity.

I attribute it to Malitia and Military forces confiscating them. Remember when the citizen pulled a gun on the Mailita the leader said something along the lines of having a firearm is a hanging offense. Still, it's a stretch since there would be no centrailized government or military to enforce laws eveny across the country. Maybe there are other regions that have a more open gun policy...

I couldn't figure out why the militia guys didn't have better guns. Gus had a big shiny handgun, so they obviously still work. They should be lousy with firearms in America, especially if they've been confiscating them from the general populace.

I wonder if this show will go along the lines of Flashback. Big mysterious event, but no real progression towards how or why it occurred (though, to be fair Flashback almost figured it out, but then, as was the case in that show, they kept going off on stupid tangents).

The pilot wasn't great, but I think I'll give episode 2 a shot. Of course it was MUCH better than Mob Doctor (which I watched immediately beforehand), so maybe my perception was skewed.
For what it's worth the clothing thing bugged me too. I don't think that everyone needs to dress up like Others (Lost Others, not GRRM Others), but they could look a little more like Losties. |

Blackpowder is cheaper and easier to make the ammo, the powder is easy to cobble together and it makes people properly aim and pick their shots rather than just run and gun. I can see Monroe is just stockpiling brass cased ammo for his attempted takeover. Keep the good stuff for the actual war. And the one guy in town at the start did have a Henry rifle variant that used cased pistol rounds. People are just hoarding the good stuff for when things get really bad. So yeah, the whole power outage thing looks to be some dampening field and the pendant projects a local area cancellation of the field.

You should read the book. The TV show fell into the trap that so many post-Lost TV shows have of being all about the big MYSTERY, ooooooooooo *conspiracy* It would've been a much cooler show if it looked more at determinism, fatalism, etc.
I really don't see this show going past one season, but then again I said the same thing about Grimm... |

That's the one...such good potential. First few episodes were great, I just didn't believe the guys drinking problem, etc. All seemed more contrived than usual as well as appearing as pure 'padding' to draw out the time until they had to reveal the reveal.
