Act I Inferno has always been pretty breezy for most people, I think.

Act III is still, as you said, tough and getting through some of the Elites with my usual party of 3 was still a slog. But the difference is deaths feel like failure on our part instead of the game suddenly hitting a difficulty spike. I'm glad they removed the Elite enrage debuff; that felt like an added punishment when you ran into a particularly tough group of mobs.

And where as before we had no way of defeating Ghom without spending endless hours grinding for new gear, this time around it took us a few tries, we switched some skills around to be more damage heavy, and took the fucker down.

I feel like this patch caters better to the average player and has gotten my friends and I playing again, so mission accomplished. Now I just wish they'd add an option to hide white and gray loot.
Took us a couple times to beat Ghom. We had to carefully manage his gas and just move little bits at a time. From what I understand, that wouldn't work before because the gas would just last forever and fill up the whole room.

And yeah, the enrage timers on the elites (which is what brought them back to full health as well) were the worst!

I thought the enrage timer was different from their regeneration. I thought I got them to regenerate quite a number of times, but only saw the enrage status once or twice. After all, I thought they regenerated when no one was around, but the rage timer only went if you were near them. Doesn't really matter at this point.

Enrage timers and regen were different.

OK, I thought they were linked. Like the regen would only happen after you died when they were enraged.

Also, I just tried Act IV. Those calling it a faceroll can bite me.

I've gotten my first two 1.0.4 legendary drops (strangely enough, neither dropped while I was wearing my item finding gear). Some pair of gloves or other and The Butcher's Sickle. The Butcher's Sickle is pretty cool, but just barely not good enough to replace my regular weapon. It's special ability is amusing enough that I may keep it around. It randomly will pull enemies toward you, Scorpion style (or, fine, D3 Butcher style). Kinda cute.

I think for me the biggest difficulty changer has been the reduced damage of fire chains and the arcane beam things. They still hurt quite a bit, but they're not instant death for melee characters anymore.
When I've died to champion packs it's been because I wasn't paying attention and got caught by a freeze, a molten explosion or stood in a plague cloud too long. Not because my health just vanished before I could do anything.
On my Barb I've actually been able to pick skills that have neither defensive buffs or life steal and still be viable. It's kind of neat!

Just beat Ghom, nasty bit that. The biggest pissoff is the shoddy collision detection.

Ok, bought a new weapon and some boots, totally changed up my build based on some research online.

Still owned by the first set of elites in Act IV.

Hmmmm, seems like I may have been exceptionally unlucky with my elite packs before. Or the game is much easier with a group now. Anyway, played the second half of Act IV with a buddy or two and managed to make it through. Never thought I'd see the day. (Although, there's a big chunk from the first half of Act IV that I still haven't played.)

The game is much, much easier with a group now. Mobs only get a 75% boost to health for each person in the game, with no bonuses to damage.

Oh, I know that. I mean, easier in a group than it is solo.

I was spending a lot of time fighting elites by myself, though, so that doesn't really seem like the answer.

Hmmm. My friend at work talked about playing Guild Wars 2 all weekend. Some kind of early access?

I picked up GW2 but I am pretty much done with it after the early access weekend. Same old, same old.

I'm curious as to what part of GW 2 was the "same old, same old?"

As much as I'm absolutely loving GW2 right now, it's certainly nothing new. It's just the tried and tested formula done better than anyone has managed since WoW.
