Is RTS really a genre that publishers won't touch now?

If so, the "AAA" part of the industry really is screwed up.

Edit - Obviously there are some RTS titles coming down the pipe from major developers. Still, this one does look cool and a little different. Hopefully they hit their goal.

Hopefully the final version looks like that trailer. I really dig the art style.

I love the enthusiasm in their trailer.

As soon as the one guy started talking about beer I went ahead and donated.

I wouldn't be surprised if RTSes are a dying breed, or at least being pushed off into the periphery by the publishers. Speaking personally, I used to consume any RTS that came out but it has been ages since I really spent a decent amount of time with one. StarCraft 2 was probably the last one I actually put time into and that was over a year ago.

I still recall the time I bought Dark Colony instead of Dark Reign...man, I hated myself for a while after that

On a side note, Defense Grid got well funded...rewards:
  • Defense Grid (already sent)
  • Defense Grid: Containment
  • Defense Grid content funded by this Kickstarter
  • Defense Grid 2
  • Private Forum Access

Considering that the Kickstarter was only to fund "Containment" with the hopes of DG2 if they hit a higher goal, it's pretty awesome that all backers get a copy of DG2 anyways when they get around to building it (they just will not be able to get it out as soon as they had hoped if they got full funding).

That's great to hear about Defense Grid.

I think most of my RTS love has shifted laterally to tower defense games. This is probably because I just don't have the hours of free time to devote to a game where I can spend an hour on a map and have my defenses fall apart at the last minute because I screwed up something in the initial section of the map and have to restart. Ah, being a parent of two young kids = no brain activity.

Totally agree. I'll still play an RTS if it has a good single player component, but I'll never get good enough at it to play MP against another human.

The best I've done is get some co-op gaming in with my brother for some "comp-stomp", but even that hasn't happened in a few years.

Bloody kids, eh? Ruining all our gaming time

The thing is, I think I've played about 3 multiplayer RTS matches in my life. I don't care about that stuff. I just want the cheesy stories and the strategy... but now I just do the TD stuff because it's much more bite-sized and I might waste 5-10 minutes on a poorly planned level instead of an hour and a half.

Christ. I'm feeling a strong urge to pledge, despite the fact that I don't care for Uber's previous games or the RTS genre as a whole... but... robots... and ASTEROIDS!

Also, I love the art style. I saw some folks bitching about it at RPS, and they can go straight to hell.

Like most Kickstarters, I probably won't donate myself. $20 is a bit high for an unreleased game that I'm not absolutely crazy for. Plus it's nearly a year away from release. This one looks like it's well on track to make its initial goal, though, so I'll be following it to see how it goes. I hope the stretch goals are interesting.

Not a game, but I finally backed my first kickstarter: John K's "Cans without Labels". I figured I owed it to my childhood.

It only has 25 hours to go, but if anyone's interested, a dollar gets you the cartoon.

I'm glad to see he made it. It was definitely a close call.

I have a lot of respect for John K. He's clearly a student of the art of cartooning that knows a lot about the masters of the craft and the techniques they used. I've just never been much of a fan of his end products.

Planetary Annihilation looks really promising. I wonder how they'll manage fog of war when you can see the silhouette of the buildings. That's something I've gone back and forth with with my own projects. I'ts Uber Entertainment too so this IMO is more of the more promising projects that has a really solid chance of actually delivering on what they are envisioning.

I'm totally throwing cash at Mercenary Kings, just the over-the-top designs are awesome.
Great thread btw!

Well, if you're observing objects in a solar system, you wouldn't be able to see anything that's behind another cosmic body. So you could hide your weaponized asteroid behind a planet only you control.

Yay! Parnell got back on the boards.

BTW, Kingdom Commander was pretty neat in the beta last weekend!

Thanks Spigot!
Heh, it was "pre-alpha" I wish we were at beta!
We still have a lot of new features to add and plan to do more play tests in the coming weeks

$15 gets you the game, and they're looking for $75k. If they get up to $175k it will have 4-player online co-op!
Paul Robertson posted another sprite from the game. I love this guy's work.

What, I thought they missed the DG2 target of a million and were still looking to fund it but Containment was what's getting made first.

Yah, but as a reward to all those that supported Containment, they'll be giving us DG2 for free when they get around to it (they hint at this December).

So...nyah nyah

Also, everyone should check out the Pinball Arcade ST:TNG table Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...ext-generation
