They did that on July 31st. If you logged into GW just before, it automagically reserved the names of your characters for GW2

It's worth noting that Guild Wars 1 required a space in all character's names, so no single word names are reserved.

Which is nice since Asura are written in such a way that they don't have surnames.

Has anyone found a page that lists what spells/abilities the racial/character choices you make translate into later in the game?

I kind of inadvertently avoided most media about Guild Wars 2 leading up to it so I have to say I'm impressed at how it's implemented. It's effing gorgeous and stylish as hell, both the design and the UI. Really glad I pre-purchased and looking forward to launch.

I'm playing around with a Necromancer. It's not bad but it seems slooooooow. As in they just seem weak. Maybe it's the early levels but I feel like it takes me forever to kill mobs.

Are necromancer pets at least permanent this time? I hated the expiring pets in the first game.

Yeah, they're permanent now. They also no longer require a nearby corpse.

That's the first time I've heard of this, actually.

I whipped around with a necromancer with... axe and warhorn? in the first BWE. I didn't notice it being any slower than other classes.

Don't quote me on this, but I think they are permanent. You can explode them for various effects, though.

Yeah, they're permanent, but like reverant said, can be detonated to do things.

That's cool. I just hated having to constantly be healing or resummoning them. Was a pain the ass.

The explosions were an awesome thing though.

With Dagger as a main and war horn off, things sped up tremendously.

Tinkered with Ranger. I am amazed at how much I enjoyed it. I had sort of written off the class but it's surprisingly fun to play. I'm not rethinking my main. Blargh.

I spent most of today trying and Asura engineer, and while it's hard to tell from early play, they are less dependent on their turrets than I thought. Then again I had just unlocked the turret when I stopped playing.

I also played around with a warrior for 20 min or so. I'd written off that class based on the abilities (seemed pretty vanilla) but I can imagine that once you unlock weapon switching having a rifle and big 2Her would be a blast.

Edit: I'm starting to have the "what's my main?" crisis as well.

While I haven't seen these abilities spelled out, if you read the race pages on the official site, it seems to lay this out pretty plainly. For example, humans get some kind of spell based on the god they pray to, Norns get an animal transformation based on their spirit animal, Asura get some kind of invention based on their college, etc.

I'm curious if these are purely flavor or not. For the humans, it seems like some gods might give healing vs damage abilities so it's be nice to read up more on them.

The one thing with the warrior that makes me love them is the insane leap they unlock as their second initial skill. Every time I hit the 2 on my keyboard, I feel like I'm in a Zack Snyder movie which I'm somehow okay with.

My favorite thing about WarHammer Online was the Shadow Warrior's "stance" that allowed him to fire arrows on the run. I played that class just for that aspect even though they were severely under-powered. I love that in GW2 all ranged classes play like this.

Over on the wiki, there's a page for racials here.

Not sure how accurate it is, but it seems to line up pretty well with what's on the main page.

Posting flurry...have they hinted that the market place will sell extra character slots? It seems odd to have 8 classes and 5 slots, though I assume part of it might be to cut down costs (which I'm ok with if they give the ability to buy more).

I agree. It took me a few plays to get over my WoW hump of just standing there exchanging blows. Didn't really click until I tried Necromancer today and then Ranger that being able to dodge even from a distance could be ridiculously helpful and firing volleys on the move is great.
