They know what they're doing. They want more exposure for their online store so they make it exclusive there. I wouldn't be surprised (and it seems like the best marketing choice to me) if they put it on Steam 6-8 months later. That way, after they've gotten some new customers on their store at maximum profits, they can put it out through other platforms. Certainly there are many of the same people who would buy it again just to have it on Steam.

I really don't think they know what they are doing. Square has been terrible about marketing their games on the PC (Eidos games not-withstanding). The Last Remnant, for example, was $40 for ages on Steam, long after it should have dropped in price.
I think you are giving them too much credit. Releasing a game through direct download only is usually a bad idea. Had they put it on Steam for $10 they might have sold quite a few copies (although releasing the 1998 game with only minor tweaks is bound to put some people off), but putting it only in their online store just seems like a bad idea. I guess we'll find out. Edit - Actually, I just checked, and The Last Remnant is still $30.

The Last Remnant has seen some pretty big sales, though. I got it for $5 a few years back.
I too, am a member of the shameful club of those who enjoyed VIII a lot. To me, the high points were the active events and all the scenes where the battles were tightly linked to what was going on in cutscenes and in the story. The system was definitely exploitable, but you have to admit it was pretty damn flexible and original. I'd love to see something that bold again, but better balanced. And FFIX was horseshit. Cute but vapid characters, locations that don't have anything to do with each other, the single most dull combat system of the entire series, and a story that basically ends at the end of the first disc and filibusters the rest.

A lot of people have complained to them about its available so maybe they'll listen. The people running their Twitter account seem receptive, at least. I'm just suggesting that selling it only on their store and nowhere else was a deliberate attempt to drive people to their online store. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the whole point of re-releasing it at all.
If they were just concerned about selling copies of FF VII, then they would put it everywhere. Heck, they put FF XIII on 360. I would think that they have other motives, and FF VII is what they determined to be the best way to get people to look at their store. Also: FF IX was my first. I love it still. |

Oh, I think I misread what you were saying. I agree that this is a move to get people to use their online store. I just don't think it will be all that successful.

I quite enjoyed FFIX because it was such a nostalgic throwback to the first 6 games. And it has Vivi.

The only problem with FFVII is that it looks like shit. Even on PC, you can enable AA, but that doesn't work on the backgrounds.

But the backgrounds are fucking beautiful. The 3D models are the problem.

Not so much at modern resolutions. Even when I played the PC version briefly back in the day they looked kind of muddy.

They looked great back when. I can totally as them lookin stretched and crappy when viewed in modern resolutions.
So far, I think the game looks the best on the PSP. The backgrounds look great and each pixel doesn't poke your eye out on the 3D models. I still wish they'd use the assets from Crisis Core for any remake they have planned.

Personally, today I find the visuals charming. Back during release, it wasn't the best but hardly a negative point against the game.

I've replayed it fairly recently, and I found the game's 2D art to still be very beautiful, particularly in Midgar. I don't think I really appreciated how cool and detailed The Wall is when I was a kid.

Release it on Steam, Origin, or even freaking GoG, you have a sale. Screw you SE and your additional store.

Ben Kuchera thinks that Square-Enix has the best support for PC for any publisher.

Ben Kuchera hasn't played anything on PC with "Final Fantasy" in the name recently I suspect.

The horror stories that Reverant is detailing in the Weekend/Weekday threads about this rerelease make me very happy that I didn't bite.
I've got it on disc (twice) for PS1, the PSN release and I'm sure that if I dig into the bottom of one of my boxes, I'll find my original PC release set. I know I still have the FF8 PC release kicking around here somewhere. I'll stay far away from this, thanks.
