TO clarify my earlier statement, I don't think we need to go on a crusade, he said something stupid, he should apologize, end of story.

Isn't that a little simplistic? I don't think you have to secretly agree with the terribad thing to be weary of outrage overkill. If all one saw were some of the reactions to this "story," one might think he had posted a video of himself smacking his wife and ordering her to make a sandwich.

Sometimes people need to think more before they speak, and sometimes people need thicker skin.

This sap's job is probably in jeopardy now, when all it should have taken was "Yeah, you shouldn't have said that, fella. You'll know better next time."

I think when half our population has been regularly dismissed some special consideration of whether or not you're being a jackass is in order. Again, I don't think anything nasty should happen to this guy, he should just apologize and that will be the end of it. I mean, for example (and let's be clear, this is hyperbole) what if he said "this is black guy mode"? I think the reaction would have been much more severe. Cause as you guys know, those black guys don't play shooters as much, why I had many black guy friends who were not shooter gamers before meeting me. end hyperbole

The clear response is to publicly rename it something that still portrays it accurately as for less-experienced gamers but would offend less of the community.

"Infinite Number of Monkeys Mode"
"Fox News Blowhard Mode"
"Osama Bin Laden Mode"

I think this is being blown out of proportion, agreeing with most of what LongStepMantis said. He didn't call it "girl mode", he called it "girlfriend mode". I think that wording goes a long way to explaining the idea of this feature in a very concise way.

I'm curious if everyone falls on the same side of this argument as they did after the whole Hitman Nuns trailer.

Regardless of the PR faux pas, this is still my most anticipated game right now. This trailer wasn't as stylized and entertaining as the last couple, but I liked the Handsome Jack character and the breakdown of the classes. The guy's voice sounded really familiar. I'll have to look him up.

In what scenario is girl mode not analogous to girlfriend mode? Also you're right this is a bit out of proportion, but it's a good conversation to have.

I don't think he should be fired, I don't think he is abusive, I do think at the very least he needs to work on some shit before he's allowed to talk to the press again.

This is different than the hitman discussion because the argument there is about genre (or at least that's what the argument was framed as). "You know, its kind of true and not THAT bad" doesn't mean that he isn't an idiot or female gamers aren't right to be upset.

Thankfully I can know someone is an idiot without getting upset.

Yeah, I'm glad I grabbed it. If they really have improved on some of the previous game's more glaring shortcomings, as it's seemed so far, it should be one of the best times you can have with a game this year.

I still don't trust them after the nightmare that was the PC version of the first game.

It was a mess. But didn't they specifically mention that those failures were among the things being addressed? I hope I didn't just imagine that.

No they did, but after being lied to my face by Pitchford about the PC being the "lead platform" on the first game. I trust them about as far as I can throw a really heavy thing.

It's funny, I never played the multi of the first game so I largely missed out on glaring issues with the PC port. There were definitely some issues with the porting, but nothing that gave me much problems. It's one of my favorite games from the last 5 years. I've put almost 200 hours into it over many playthroughs. If they can deliver as much fun as the original while smoothing the issues out, this is going to be a favorite for a long time.

I feel the same way. The first game is kind of a pain in the butt on the PC, so I'm not in any hurry to buy the sequel until it's out in the wild and several sources confirm that it's actually not a mess.

I did enjoy the first game, despite the issues, but I'm never able to play it for long periods of time as I find the environments quite dull. The sequel is supposed to address that as well, so hopefully it will be much improved. There's certainly a lot of potential for this game to be awesome.

I think the issue with the comment is the context more than the comment itself. It's a lame stereotype joke on par with a woman making a comment about boyfriends being a pain in the arse on shopping trips. However, when you take into account the sexism in the gaming community and the fucked up and hateful incidents we've had this year, it becomes a much bigger issue. I'm not sure if the guy is wilfully ignorant or just a douche.

It could be neither. It's far more likely he's just one of many people who have ingrained in their lexicon these stereotypical phrases. Saying someone 'throws like a girl' or making a joke about how men 'never ask for directions' are just lame, as you said, and show a lack of thinking beyond the stale tropes.

Of course, people should know better than to generalize, but it seems to be human nature to do so.

In the current climate, I don't think that's a legitimate excuse, especially when he's talking to the press. How can you not know that sexism in gaming is a big issue? You've either got to be going out of your way to ignore it or just not care.

"Girl mode", to me, would present the assumption that girls are not as good at video games as boys.

"Girlfriend mode" to me, paints the picture of two people with a relationship where they want to enjoy entertainment together, but one of the parties is much more into video game than the other and in order for them to both have a good time, there are features that makes the game more approachable for the less interested party. And stereotypically, it is more often going to be the case that a boy is more into video games than his girl friend.

It's not about making the game easier for a certain gender. It's about making the game easier for someone who is being coaxed by a friend into trying something outside of their comfort zone.

Granted, I'm only following this story here, but I don't understand the comments about the reaction to this issue being overblown. Is that in reference to something someone said here? As far as I can tell the comments here seem to agree that the statement was stupid, but not that it really goes beyond that.
