If you're not looking to spend too much, the Samson SR850s are fantastic for the price. I have this same pair, and those reviews comparing it to far pricier headphones are accurate. They also double as gaming headphones nicely.

I had a pair of Motorola ones a few years back that worked fine until the volume rocker broke. Then they didn't.

I probably should have said something other than buds. I mean the small earbuds that go into your ear. When I said non in-ear, I meant the type that have rubber tips and are meant to be jammed in to form a seal. I hate how those feel and they're pretty gross after use.

This is a really common thing in the world of audio. Mids can be annoying, muddy and cause a lot of ear fatigue if they aren't balanced properly so the solution of a lot of companies is to drop the mids and replace it with bass and midbass punch and extra treble. It gives the initial impression that you're hearing a really huge but incredibly clean sound. When instead you're actually missing a significant portion of sound.

So make sure when you test this stuff out you do so with music that you're intimately familiar with.

I recently discovered that this kinda crap is especially bad in the world of car audio.

I thought the whole point of car audio was to compress everything into a specific range so you can hear it over the engine?

That's what volume is for.

But yes, that kind of equalization works well for cars due to the mid-range getting lost in road and engine noise anyway.
