5 Games That Would Have Been Better With Spoilers Up Front

I thought this was an interesting article and figured it'd be nice to discuss it without having to wade through the cesspit that is IGN comments.

The spoilers in the article are for Red Dead Redemption, Braid, Spec Ops: The Line, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Heavy Rain.

I definitely don't agree with everything he says, especially regarding RDR, which he seems to single out for heavy criticism just for being a game in which the hero kills lots of people, however I definitely agree that it'd be nice to have more games offering you time for reflection on the game's themes, rather than just saving the big reveal up for the end. While the last part of Bioshock was pretty weak, I'm glad that the confrontation with Ryan wasn't reserved for the very end.

I only read the Braid and RDR sections.

I don't think this guy understood those stories at all.

Another opinion piece sounding as if the writer's reasoning is without flaw. It's opinion. I'll agree to disagree with your nonsense.

That's too applied for my tastes. Math makes the most sense to me when it's reality bending abstraction. Or when it's evil~ Frederec

Yeah, Braid wasn't like that. A bit maybe but not like he put it.

I also disagree with his assessments, but not just as it relates to the storytelling. His "improved" version of RDR doesn't sound like a game that would be entertaining to play.

Would have loved to see that in RDR as the moral of the story is broken within maybe 45 minutes of the game. But thats like a great deal of games where quests have a character actively doing strange shit that doesn't SEEM to fit.

I wouldn't have wanted to play the boy. Instead I would have LOVED if it stared right as he was shot and you got to see how it all came together. Though those types of shows/games are just as common now.

Cant believe the writer didn't have ME3 on his list. Its a far better fit.

Fuck me he managed to outwank Blow with Braid. And yeah he completely missed the point of RDR's story, it was shit after Act 1 but I'll give them some credit for the ending.

Can't spell ignorant without IGN, a timeless truth it seems.

This is what modern art does by the way, trains people to pull "meaning" out their arses even when it's right in front of them.

The best part of RDR was Mexico.

The ride home after "finishing" the main story was brilliant in my book, although that Jamie Lidell song helped a lot.

And i can't remember my Marshton actually being evil and serving up women for rape. Heck the guy wouldn't even bang a hooker. And i saved a lot of innocent people in my run.

My favourite part of RDR that most people never pick up on: every time you drink the tonic, you do get better.

That song played in my car for a whole month after I finished the game. The use of Moriccone-esque strings was brilliant.

I'm hazy enough on the plot of Braid that I'm not going to quibble with whether he missed the point of it, but I do think he's wrong that it would have been better to know up front that Tim isn't really the good guy. That moment at the end when time reverses and the Princess is running away from you is powerful, and I don't think it would really be improved by knowing the twist beforehand.

I did get the impression that he missed the point of Red Dead, which wasn't about a bloody revenge quest, but a man pulled back into a violent life against his will, and ultimately that life coming back to kill him. And like someone else said, I don't think you can really hold optional side quests against the game. My game certainly didn't involve Marston delivering people to the Mexican Army. Man, I love that game something fierce.
