I don't know whether this is what muddi meant, but the best Superman stories in my mind are the ones that are about (a) his desperate loneliness as an outsider, and how no matter how many times he saves people they never really see him as one of them, or (b) the incredible danger posed by his abilities and the restraint he needs to exercise in using them.

(a) is certainly relatable - we all feel like outsiders once in awhile, desperately longing to be understood - and while (b) isn't something most of us ever have to worry about it certainly makes for compelling fiction.

EDIT: Also anyone who thinks DC views Superman as their "Godlike" character has never seen anything where they put him up against Batman. Bruce always wins. Every time.

Flaws? He's a paragon but he's hardly perfect. He believes in people a little too much sometimes and still engages in Superdickery to this day. In the DCnU he's so god damn beta it hurts.

Weakness is a loaded term. While he's only weak to kryptonite (which seems to grow on trees), red sunlight will depower him. He's also just as vulnerable to both magic and psychic attacks as anyone.

And this relating fetish I will never get. I've never seen having a deep emotional parallel with something as a requirement to enjoy it. Mind you, you really don't feel any connection to an outsider trying to find his place in the world and be a decent human being?

Maybe in the deconstructions, but every Superman comic up to the 80's (and some since) has him as a derring-do Cape-type whose only moral flaw is that he's TOO nice and forgiving.

I've become kind of jaded with Western-style comics and how they go on and on and on with no end in sight. I do read graphic novels though, primarily because they avoid that.

Also, Marvel's Civil War ruined everything good about Marvel.

So aside from being the strongest person in the universe who is completely immune from physical damage, can fly, has x-ray vision, can fry anything with super-heat vision, can freeze anything with freeze breath, can survive in space with little more than a breath mask, he's far from unbeatable. Also, being handsome isn't a bad thing, but combined with everything else it makes Superman just too idealized. And besides, just because someone doesn't look as good as, say, Christopher Reeve doesn't mean they don't look heroic. For example, half of the allure of movies like 28 days later is because the characters do not look like super-handsome glamorous movie stars, they look like the average person you might walk by in the street.

Well, part of sympathizing with a character requires the ability to understand and relate to their personal/emotional crises and situations. Spider-man is a great example of a very relatable hero.

I do--It's just that when you consider that the world at large absolutely ADORES him, the only one who considers Supes an outsider is Supes himself.


I get what you're trying to say, but IMO Superman is just too idealized and perfect for my tastes and it makes him less interesting a character than, say, Batman or Spider-man or the Punisher, all who have very human flaws and difficulties.

Imagine being Superman. Imagine the loneliness of flying paired with the loneliness of being Superman. I bet he does that every now and then to leave his sonic mark on the world. And kids playing in the streets below hear the thunder and look to the skies.

I preferred the Jor-el version of the trailer. That was the version that played this past weekend in front of DKR. I'm also willing to let myself be a little excited about the film because I thoroughly enjoyed Snyder's treatment of Watchmen. Didn't care much for his other films, but Watchmen was good. Here's hoping he brings a bit of that sobriety to Superman.

If the trailers are any indication, we probably won't have to.
I mean, I really can't complain. it seems that Goyer and Nolan enjoy adapting some of DC's more iconic stories.
