I'm with J Arcane on this. The idea of a limitless level system that applies to every character you make basically means that anyone who buys the game a week after launch will be completely gimped.

The info we have says "small stat boosts," but now we're talking about being "completely gimped" in a co-op game due to one week difference in playtime?

I guess if your goal is to have the biggest e-peen in Borderlands 2 out of all players everywhere this might be a concern for you, but the way the system is described so far makes it sound like it won't be the main way you gain skills, just a bit of a bonus for people who put hundreds of hours into the game.

I doubt the bonuses are going to be so drastic that it'll be all that noticeable unless you and someone else are hundreds of hours apart. If that is the case, the more "badass" player can just use a character that's a few levels below yours to even things out.

This is a total exaggeration. I'd understand if everyone played like Koreans but they don't.
I really don't understand what is wrong here?
So your friends who play more with you do slightly more damage or can take a few more hits?

Really? I mean really?

Small stat boosts aren't game breaking. Now over an extensive period of time the boosts will add up but so what? It's not a competitive game. Giving people who like the game enough to play it a lot should be rewarded.

This is a silly criticism. I don't get mad that my diablo friends play more and have much better items than me and when they start new characters with me, their new characters are decked out in high quality gear. That's just...

I mean really?

I really don't see any problem with this either. Borderland's ultimate failing was in the terrible scaling of effectiveness when players were over 5 levels apart. It made it practically impossible to play with friends without serious planning. If you were level 30 and your friend 20, the game wasn't fun for whoever wasn't hosting. They needed a sidekick system akin to City of Heroes or other MMOs.

On second thought, this might just make that level gap problem even worse. I'm curious if they've done anything at all to fix it, as it basically ruined multiplayer for me.

I never played MP, so I don't care about that. I just want the damn game.

Y'know, I may be a little irrational about my love for Borderlands.

You and I have very similar feelings about Borderlands.

We should have a LAN party sometime and play singleplayer Borderlands 2 together in the same room.

What ruined MP for me was that it NEVER FUCKING WORKED RIGHT.

Requiring port forwarding this century was absolutely obnoxious.

Actually, I'll probably be the one to be tougher than my friends, because they don't game as much as I do. Yes, being more powerful matters, and takes fun out of the game in direct proportion to how much more powerful your character is compared to theirs. If it weren't an account-wide thing, it wouldn't be a big deal, I'd just have one character be for them and one for me, just like always. Not possible here.

ITT mountains are made out of molehills.

A. You have no idea how large/small the boost will be.
B. You have no idea how common the increases will be.
C. You have no idea what if any effect these unknowable increases will have on co-op play.
D. Who gives a shit if somebody who plays 10x as much as you has a slightly more effective character in a co-op game? I guess the obvious answer is everybody who is complaining, I suppose the real question is umm, why?

"Oh noes, Bob does 1% more DPS than I do, we can never group again."

I expect it to work just like Borderlands, ~95% of your effectiveness will be having the best guns overall and the appropriate guns for any given encounter. You might have +5 badass but if I'm the one with the 4x Combustion Hellfire guess who is really more badass?

They also announced that they're killing the Arena PvP mode anyway, so any dick measuring in Borderlands 2 will have to be done indirectly.

I hope they give you the ability to turn it off. Not because I am terribly concerned about gimping MP or anything. It is just that when I start a new playthrough, I like starting out terrible. The makes me enjoy the leveling. If the badass level is so high that I start a new character and feel more powerful, I think that will hurt the replay instead of make it great like it was in Borderlands 1.
