Shootmania beta thread
Did anyone else get into the beta? I just got my invite and I'm downloading right now.

Yeah, I got in last night. I was considering making a thread but I wasn't sure about any NDA status...
It feels like an old unreal tournament mod or something similar. I'm still getting the hang of the movement, which is kind of floaty, and after you jump you can kind of glide a very tiny bit. It almost feels like Tribes skiing, but not nearly as fun or useful. It's fast paced and fairly entertaining, but there just isn't a lot of meat there. I was also having a lot of issues with lag... not so much me lagging but other players warping around, which makes hitting them damn near impossible, since you have to hit people with relatively slow moving shots directly. edit: It shows the country flag of the other players, which ranged all over the world in any given server. It's not surprising that there were lag problems with people on the other side of the planet from the server region.

Giant Bomb posted a Quick Look of this recently... not sure where I stand on it yet.

I missed the beta sign up, but I am curious try this out. I'm curious how much of an appetite there still is for an old-school twitch shooter.

I got really hooked on TotalBiscuit's coverage of the Shootmania contest earlier this year. The game is deceptively simple, but watching the coverage proved me otherwise. It's extremely team and strategy oriented. If you run and gun, you will die. Period. You have to be very smart in this game, which is freakin' great. Can't wait until I get a chance to play it myself.

I see this game also has a mechanic that I'd always wanted to see in an arena style shooter...that of no pickups, but you can get a different weapon when you stand on a given tile and only while standing on that tile.
I always thought that would make for some interesting gameplay. |

I tell ya, it was confusing as hell when I first had my weapon switch for no apparent reason. Also, the jump key also zooms in when using the lighting cannon/railgun type weapon, so if you get on the plate that gives you the weapon, you can't jump any more, because you just zoom in and out. I don't know if this is intentional or not, but it really fucked with my chi until I figured out what was going on.

I think Space also shares the same function as Mouse2 and doesn't get changed.

Eh, maybe that's why... I use a unique set of keybinds (mouse2 is move forward, space is usually crouch, g is jump) that I often have issues with in games with odd controls. I'll figure it out eventually.

No matter how I download the client, any browser, any download client, I always get the source corrupted error.

I'm not a fan so far. It's a combination of the lag I seem to get everywhere and how basic the game is.
