I'm more interested in the mechanics about what the process is that these people on XDA are using to create the root etc.
I think it would be a blast to do in my spare time.

I agree with this actually. If I had the spare time, I think it would be very cool to keep track of and maybe even do. But alas, life calls.

Senti Wayk

As alarm clocks go, Senti Wayk isn't the most feature rich (that title goes to our favorite, Alarm Clock XTreme), but it's grown on us a lot—mostly because instead of just wake us up, it delivers useful information as soon as we get out of bed. You can tell the clock to snooze by speaking "snooze" out loud or by waving your hand over the screen. When you get up, it'll tell you the temperature outside, let you know of any early morning appointments or meetings you have on your calendar, and read you the news from a few RSS feeds while you get ready. It's part alarm clock, part personal assistant, and we like that.

Bounce

Bounce is in beta, but it's already one of the best tools on Android to help proactively get you to where you need to be. The app works with your calendar and your phone's GPS to send you push notifications when you need to leave for a meeting, taking into account traffic and other obstacles in your way. The app will notify you an hour ahead of your appointment, and then again right when it's time for you to get in the car or start walking to your destination. In our tests, it did pretty well. Honestly, it's the closest thing you'll get to Google Now until you get Jelly Bean.

So I'm in Android update purgatory. Every Evo 3D in the world from every carrier except Sprint in the U.S. has received ICS. Even the Virgin Mobile, a pre fucking paid carrier, version had ICS out of the box. Their early 2012 goal went, their late June goal went, and it seems like their end of July goal is going to pass us by. It makes no sense that Sprint would block the update since Evo 3D owners can't upgrade to a new device if even we wanted to. Thinking about going the root way, and then cancelling with Sprint when my contract is up under the specific reason of shoddy hardware support.

Yeah, you should just root it and see if they have an unofficial ICS stock upgrade (modded from another carrier's). If I left my upgrades to Sprint and Samsung, I'd still be on 2.1.

And, 3 hours after activating it my S3 is now rooted and is running a custom recovery. Boo yeah. Time to get rid of the bloat and install wifi tether!

Got Jelly Bean installed on my wife's Galaxy Nexus. Haven't had too much time to play with it but right off the bat I can tell that Project Butter is noticeable: things are much smoother.

You know Project Butter is like number 1 reason I'm thinking Galaxy Nexus. Google Now is a close second.

Yeah, I just received an OTA update for my Nexus to Jellybean. Things do seem smoother, and taps on the screen have a more tactile feel. I have to find out what other changes I should be looking for.

Yeah, Butter is definitely awesome. I am waiting to mess around with Now more once I actually have something that cards would be helpful for. Though I suppose I could just ask it stuff too.

Yeah, it has been a while since a phone made it past day 1 or 2 without being rooted for me. I stuck with the stock rom and teamwin recovery so as not to trip the flash counter and hopefuly not get the ota they put out. I am really fucking glad touchwiz is no where near as shitty as sense. I can live with touchwiz until we get cm10.

My one peeve so far is the s-voice delay on the home button, when i hit home just take me to the home page dammit.
