[E3 2012] Dishonored
Out of an E3 packed with sequels it was really nice to come across something totally new on the show floor. A game that had no connection to anything from the past, mainly because it didn’t have a past. I’m talking about Bethesda’s Dishonored.
This was a game I was really looking forward to and I wasn’t disappointed with what I saw. You play as a supernatural assassin set in a steampunk city. The setting is one that I love and putting me in the role of a sneaky assassin during a setting like this is icing on the cake. Then there’s all the powers you get. The main power used is one that can teleport you from place to place without being seen. It uses a resource, but not much of it and it regenerates over time. Still, it was a great way to get around and to get past certain situations that would either be much more difficult or take a lot more time. One of the other powers shown off was possession. You can possess both human and animals as was exemplified when we took possession of a fish. Doing so allowed to get inside a building we normally couldn’t get in. When you take possession, it isn’t like your body stays behind, it comes with you, so wherever you lose possession is where you end up. When taking possession of a human, it’ll allow you to sneak by guards or gain access to areas that only that character can reach. Even still, you can take possession of your targets and lead them off to a secluded area for the kill, or lock them out on a balcony, return to form and then push them off - it’s really up to you. The demo showed one mission but took two different playthroughs to show us the different ways you can achieve your objective. Completely with stealth or extremely aggressively. Normally I go stealth almost always. Sneaking is just more fun for me, but the demo made going aggressive look just as fun. You have a wind power that can push people back or send projectiles, like missiles, back to who fired them at you. Another power summons a swarm of rats. And yet another powers that slows down time letting you fire off multiple shots that hang in the air once you’re fired. Start time back up again and it’s headshots all around. I want to say that you might be more overpowered than you should be in this game, but even the guy playing the demo actually died while trying to show off the powers. One of your inherent powers that doesn’t use any resource is your dark vision. Again, think of it like “eagle vision” from Assassin’s Creed. It lets you see your targets and the NPC’s in the area. An interesting effect of dark vision is that it also shows you the NPC’s view cones letting you know exactly how big someone’s field of vision is and if you’ll be seen or not. The whole demo was exciting and very fast paced. Later on they skipped ahead in the game and showed off some of the TallBoys. These are the very tall looking Strider-like machines you may have seen in some of the game’s trailers. They’re actually human driven and yes, you can possess them as well. I’d love to say that it’s because of the new IP that I’m so excited for this game, but it can’t ONLY be that. It has a little to do with it, but it’s mostly the fun I had in what I saw for the game. The ability to make that choice as to how you want to complete your mission is a strong one for me, but even Dishonored has more going for it than just that. It seems no matter which way you decide to go in your mission, you’re equipped to do so with as much fun as possible. A lot of the times games can give you the choice of how to complete a mission, but they really want you to do it only one way, but Dishonored doesn’t care how you do it and gives you the tools to go in guns blazing or taking your time to make it seem like you were never even there. You’ll be able to decide how you want to play on the 360, PS3, and PC when Dishonored is released this October. |

I'm really looking forward to this game and I hope we see many more new IPs like this going into the new generation of consoles.

This is one of my most anticipated games at the moment. I can't wait to get my grubby mitts on it.
