Are you playing peaceful or with enemies on? I can never get very far due to creeper blasts when I play normal. I get something pretty decent going and *bam* all my stuff ends up in a pile. I only started playing Saturday, and have been using Easy difficulty. And I've been using the Wiki to figure out things that aren't immediately apparent (making crafting table, storage chest, furnace, etc.).

Creepers haven't been bothering me much when I'm building, though one did creep up on me while I was planting seeds and took a good chunk out of one of my houses. Now I've got a full suit of iron armor, and have made stone & iron swords, so most enemies aren't too hard to take on out in the open. And I've got my biggest house fenced in, so creepers shouldn't be making it to my doorstep.
