Mechwarrior Online Shows Us Some Gameplay

I really wish they would spend time on making the world react to mechs in a game - seriously. Imagine buildings shaking apart or partially collapsing into rubble, gas fires, etc. Air shockwaves, billowing dust, etc.

Who doesn't remember those tiny plebeians sprites running away from you in Mechwarrior 4?

That said, I liked using a moderately fast mech with jumpjets machineguns and flamethrowers. Getting away from heat-related recator overloads was a problem sometimes.

Actually, the more I watch the Mechwarrior Online videos, the less impressed I am with it. I DO LIKE Mechwarrior Tactics though. Nice!

Essentially yes.
Because they are relatively small as mechs go and their ability to traverse the maps is entirely dependent on their non-ambulatory systems...too me they are little more than flying junk piles on screen. The small size coupled with the speed of combat and over-detailing of the environment gives it all a kind of "Transformers" effect...where you can't really distinguish anything other than "that's an enemy junk-pile...I better shoot it."

I honestly don't totally dislike what I see in Hawken though. It looks like fun in it's own way. It's just that to me, the execution of their ideas is flawed. Also it looks like the guy in charge of making the maps had a fever...and the only thing that could cure it was more "industrial future".

Holy heck, these Japanese hobbyists are building a 12-foot-tall pilotable mech

...this is straight out of Ghost In The Shell. Meet Vaudeville, a twelve-foot-tall, five-ton mecha that's manipulated using Kinect, or that XBox peripheral commonly known for its embarrassing dance party games.

A group of Tokyo mecha enthusiasts are building this imposing machine with large mitts, but don't expect heavy firepower here. Once completed, Vaudeville's primary weapon will be an optional water gun, a far cry from a positron sniper rifle. (The engineers also offer to equip Vaudeville with a mop, as a comically impractical "home cleaning robot.")
