Btw, things you should take people to instead of the stupid mountain hike:

1. It's the right season for one day to be used to float the river (which is fun, cheap, and somewhat unique to the area); and/or

2. Alamo Draft House Cinema - we take it for granted in Austin, but everyone who visited me while I had cancer LOVED getting beer and a burger when going to the movies.

Mountain hike is not stupid. But anyway, #1 may be too far away considering the amount of time we have and amount of cars to take everyone.

#2 should have been on my list, of course, I will make sure we go to Alamo. It's never to be taken for granted; I only go to Alamo for movies nowadays. I had 4 free tickets for any movie/showtime for a non-Alamo theater and never used them.

There are a few places that have most beers imaginable. And quite a few local microbreweries worth checking out their wares.

Depends on how this summer turns out... but a potential for 110 degrees. Don't worry, I'll be sweating more than anyone. Bring hankerchiefs.

Pretty good. There's tons of bars/restaurants with their own microbrews so you'll usually run into something interesting. Shiner, imo, makes the best "cheap" beer around, my favorite being the Black variety.

I've only had the Shiner Bock, which I think I liked. It's been a while.

Austin sounds like a great place to lose weight.

That's only if it made you only sweat. It's so hot, it also saps your energy, leaving you lying on the sidewalk, slowly roasting as every ounce of water is ripped from your body. You die a mummy.

Luckily, they invented Air Conditioning.

@Bone - You're right that floating is sort of an all-day affair due to the hour-long drive there and back (unless you hit San Marcos which isn't as good).

If you do more than one night at bars, then I'd suggest karaoke (possibly Korean karaoke) as downtown can be a real pain.

I agree, but when out-of-Texas people come in, I like to get Zigenbach. It's basically a slightly sweeter Shiner that is only sold in Texas. Also, when I was well employed, I always kept Brooklyn Lager and Smithwick's stocked (I miss you Spec's!).

Question about heat

Honestly, I spent the summer months with siesta scheduling. On Saturday, I'd get all my chores done in the morning, then stay inside playing video games, watching movies, and/or taking a knap. Then we'd go out for dinner around 8PM. 9PM we'd catch a comedy show, movie, etc. or go to an indoor bar where we'd play Apples to Apples and the smokers would go out occasionally. Finally, by 11PM, it's nice out, and this is when you actually hit the bars (or go home).

So it's going to be absolutely awful, BUT your hosts will know how awful it is and will probably plan around it. If someone wants to go somewhere that's outside after lunch or before 11PM and it isn't a water park, you might want to bow out.

I just realized the other day that the Sturgis Black Hills Rally is the week after the August 3-5 weekend! I now know my home bound route.

I spent several hours on Google maps the other evening:

"As long as I'm in Texas I should go down to Big Bend NP. Ooooo... What's this? Carlsbad Cavern NP and Guadalupe Mountains NP. I should probably hit San Antonio to see the Alamo... Wow! New Orleans is just a couple hundred miles east! I could ride the part of the Mississippi River that I missed last year! Gee! If I'm up near Iowa I could cruise up to Norwalk and see my Grandparents old place! Hey! The Corn Palace is on the way to Sturgis! Yay! Buffalo Chip Campground!"
