PS3 2.70 firmware - 16 player chat

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/...e-v270-update/

It's 16-player text chat, however.

I'm hoping this proves to be an April Fools revelation and they'll put up an update that announces it's actually voice chat because otherwise I just don't see a reason to get excited about it at all.

Does 'Text Chats' have sex with men or something... I'm confused.

Nah, I think "text" speaks pretty queer until you bribe it with a chat pad.

My 10 dollar keyboard works fine. I don't need no stinking 50 dollar chat pad.

Useless. Who's going to really pause in the middle of an online match to create a chat room and text your buddy? I guess they're saving voice chat for 2.80.

I do like the ability to backup video purchases.

Just about every online shooter has it's own dedicated voice chat. Text chat isn't meant to take that over. I equate it to our IRC channel. I communicate here but I always have a different conversation going there.

What if you want to voice chat with someone outside of the game you're playing?

That's not an option right now.

That's kind of the point. Why dedicate any resources to getting cross-game text chat up and running when it's not really something you'd want to do while gaming or watching a movie?

I said to someone tonight, that if they could do voice chat in game, they would have done it as opposed to this.

Argh. Sony really are the masters of wasted resources.

Just update the freaking codecs already, or make the XMB stream music for every game and photos form a mediaserver.

I don't get it. Why would I use text chat while playing a game? I don't have time for that shit when I'm gaming. I realised this was a dumb idea back when I tried the MSN messenger shit on the 360.

If Sony hadn't spent some much time and money on Home we would already have cross game voice chat. Multi-person text chat is useless.

Downloaded it. Don't care. I'm just waiting for the "it took me 4 hours to update, Sony is teh suck!" posts that come with every update. That, or the "I have to update the PS3 every time I turn it on" posts. Those are always classic.

But, it's true, isn't it?

My updates usually take 10-15 minutes on a cable modem. I usually just walk away and do something else so it's no big deal. The only time it's really bad is when I have someone over and I want to show them something on the PS3 and there's a new update.

I think some people only turn on the PS3 when they read that there is an update. That is why you always get the "I have to update the PS3 every time I turn it on" posts.

It took me less than 45 minutes. I only know because I let it download while I watched my DVR'd episode of Lost skipping commercials. It was finished updating before the episode was over.

It does suck at times to update this often. It really sucks when you are just trying to get on to try out your latest $10 Target purchase like I was for last nights. It makes that 20 minute time investment 65 minutes.

My updates are always pretty quick, 10 minutes tops.
