Your message to the distant future.
I was listening to a science podcast that talked about future fossils, essentially what would or wouldn't survive 100 million years if mankind were to suddenly become extinct.
Of particular note were books and digital media, neither of which would last in a readable state for that long, meaning that very little of the information around today would turn up if future archaeologists, either from vastly evolved humans, the next intelligent race on Earth, or visiting aliens, dug up our civilization. So I imagined a more permanent relic to be left behind, where information would be etched into a physical media that would stand the test of time. Space would be limited, so let's say the project were funded by donations, and contributors were allowed to submit up to 500 characters (roughly 100 words). Assume that the project already includes notable pieces of writing, as well as a sufficient cypher so an intelligent race will likely be able to decode our language. What text would you submit? But seriously, I guess I would write: What walks on four legs in the morning, Two Legs in the afternoon, and three legs at night? Timeless riddles should never be forgotten.

This would be much more accurate...
We could have saved ourselves, but we were too damned lazy. ...the Earth will be here long after the universe has completely forgotten about our accomplishments. Unless We Leave |

Where is that quote from?
My message would be something similar: "I apologize for all of humankind, who in their selfishness and greed ruined Earth". Although 100 million years from now the planet and the environment will likely have recovered from all damage we've caused, even if many species have been wiped out during our time here. We'll certainly be long gone. That or "Welcome to Samsara".

The medium is the message. The most interesting information contained in this inscription is the simple fact that we wanted to communicate with entities that would not exist until millions of years after we all died. Did we care because we recognized a commonality with our distant successors, or because we genetically associate you with our own children, or because we were plaintively seeking a shred of immortality, or for some other reason? We didn't know. Do you?
(That's 470 characters including spaces, by the way.)
