[Rumor] Who's Up For An Elder Scrolls MMO?

Today's hot rumor comes from Tom's Guide, who claim that an Elder Scrolls MMO is in fact deep in development at Bethesda. Tom's anonymous sources further say that the game would be set a millennium before the events of Skyrim. According to the Elder Scrolls wiki, that would put it in the Second Era of Tamriel, which predates the founding of the Empire which was at the center of all previous Elder Scrolls titles. The rumor goes on to say that the game will likely be announced in May, with more info coming at E3 in June and QuakeCon in August.

So, do we buy it? Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media has been hiring people for what appears to be an MMO for years now, but that doesn't specifically mean it would be an Elder Scrolls MMO. It could be a Fallout MMO or a new IP altogether. Rumors of an Elder Scrolls MMO have been swirling ever since the MMO market hit big back in the mid 2000s, but that's as much a point against the rumor as one for it. An MMO could be a huge hit, but even if it wasn't it would likely mean the end of non-MMO Elder Scrolls titles for the foreseeable future.

Then there's the market. Right now there are - for all intents and purposes - only two subscription based MMOs in operation: World of Warcraft and Star Wars The Old Republic. Would TES MMO go the old route of being a sub-based game, or would they try to position themselves as the first truly huge F2P MMO?

Right now I'd rate this rumor as 'plausible'. The pieces all seem to fit together, and there's no obvious competition for such a game on the horizon.

I'd prefer a Fallout MMO. We're already well covered for sword and sorcery MMOs and the Elder Scrolls universe doesn't have anything to make it stand out. As much as I love TES I don't see myself playing it in MMO form.

As I said in the PC forum; I love TES, and I love MMO's. I still don't want this. I'd much rather they continue the series than sink a lot of money into a risky MMO. With the success of Skyrim I doubt they won't continue the singleplayer series, but I'd rather they focus there. I can't see an MMO giving me as much freedom as a normal TES game.

Also, I'd say Guild Wars 2 is going to be the first truly huge F2P MMO.

Well, GW2 is F2P only in the sense that there's no subscription fee after purchasing the retail copy.

TES: Online would have to be such a radical departure from any MMO that came before it for me to be interested. It would have to essentially be a multiplayer Skyrim. TES is about exploration, survival, and YOU. Not even TOR gives me the feeling of the game being focused on the player like TES games do.

No, no, no, no, no!

There are already a ton of MMOs on the market. There are far more of those than there are good single player RPGs, and I'd hate to see yet another developer put their focus on a MMO and ditch the single-player market. This would be really disappointing if true.

I don't see what The Elder Scrolls would bring to the MMO space that would be in any way unique. Now, allow for co-op, and I'm all aboard, I'd love to quest in an Elder Scrolls (or Fallout) game with a friend or two.

Adding in a second, third, or even fourth player would be fun. Keep the game the same and let a few other people jump in for some co-op. I'd be all for that.

A MMO, however? Please don't!

Yeah for co-op, no for MMO.

I can't even believe this is being contemplated given how many have tried and failed. And now you have two behemoths to compete with in Star Wars and WoW.

Also, Bethesda doesn't know, or give two damns, about game balance. Which is OK in a single player game, but...

As I mentioned in the other thread about this...I'm ok with it ONLY if they let us do the following:

Create quests for other players. Otherwise just give me MP in an existing ES game and be done with it. People have been wanting that since before recorded time

You all are turning a blind eye to the potential good in this.

The OP also does not mention that the game would be set during the "second era". It would be a familiar yet profoundly different from the games people are used to. There would be races and lands that no longer exist in skyrim timeline and undoubtedly...almost all the areas previously visited by the games would be accessible, as well as new areas.

you mean the second era wasn't mentioned...except for the mention and a link to the Second Era entry on the wiki .

So it would just be every other grindtastic MMO with a TES skin.

Still failing to see the appeal.

If you are a fan of the games at all, you would see the clear appeal in being able to access the entire known world of Tamriel (scaled up for scope) and in a radically different and interesting timeline all in one game, and being able to do so with friends.

In one way or another, this is how I see this announcement. I like the setting.

I could give a fuck about "lorderon" and all of WoW's cartoony stylization. But to revisit Marrowind before Red Mountain erupted and blighted the land, before the ghost gate was setup. That I can get behind.
