Too Short?
So, a thought crosses my mind -
Is there a reason we need to have the 10 character minimum? It's occasionally annoying, but if it CAN be removed, I'm not sure we get any benefit from it. This is not a major concern, and if the site leadership said "NO WAY", I wouldn't care, but I was wondering what people thought. |

Or if possible just have it add the necessary extra characters at the end of the post, gobbledygook for all I care.

I visit another forum that has a 1 character limit so I'm pretty sure it CAN be changed.
I personally would be in favor of the change. I believe the reasoning behind it is that a post of less than 10 characters is really not substantial/noteworthy enough to bother posting and it encourages people to think of something more substantial to contribute to the conversation, but that's very subjective, and most people just add filler crap that still contributes nothing to the conversation when faced with this problem. Run-on sentence is run-on. |

I don't think the culture of our forum is one that necessitates a 10char limit. I don't think we'd have a problem if it were removed. Same for the all caps limiter. People here tend to do both only when it's pertinent or funny.

I have been consistently impressed with and proud of the lack of forum jackassery here, and I don't think that the 10-char limit has much to do with it. Sometimes a one-word response is the funniest thing possible.

Yes it can be changed. But it won't. For one reason.

Besides, you can bypass it by just putting a bunch of spaces and a bit of punctuation

I think it's pretty well established that CoG and its users are not like most other forums out there.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused, as well. QFT (TOOSHORT) is equally obnoxious. I don't often need it, but sometimes a one word response is the perfect punchline.

A one word punchline is still possible, just use spaces. If holding down the space bar for less than 3 sec constitutes any real inconvenience for you, just punch yourself in the junk right now. Repeatedly.

Well, now that I'm back from the junk punching, that just proves my point. It's an avoidable rule, why have the rule at all?
