Mortal Kombat Dev Outs The PSP2

Many people were thinking that we'd be seeing a PSP2 announcement at TGS, but with all the major events of the show come and gone there hasn't been a mention of the portable PlayStation's successor. Of course, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, at least according to what Mortal Kombat reboot developer Netherrealm's Shaun Himmerick told IndustryGamers during an interview at PAX:

IndustryGamers asked about the possibility of a version of Mortal Kombat on the current PSP or the upcoming 3DS, and Himmerick replied:

“We’re not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support. Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is.”

Of course when asked Sony has refused to comment. There's always the possibility that they're waiting for Nintendo to show their hand in a few short weeks before announcing anything.

Great! Hopefully, there is NO 3D support in the PSP2. I think I'm the only gamer not really looking forward to the 3DS, as I just KNOW it will bring eyestrain, headaches, and piss poor viewing angles. Not to mention going back to a smaller screen than my XL.

You know you can turn the 3D off on the 3DS, right? It's still a far more powerful console than the current DS.

Right, forgot about that, thanks. However, if the PSP2 adds some kind of Trophy support, I don't see myself ever buying a 3DS unless is has something equivalent. I like my XL just fine. I mean, aside from not owning a smartphone yet, the main reason I'm excited about Windows Phone 7 as a gaming platform is the achievements.

If you want a good gaming platform on a phone, I hear the iPhone is a pretty good platform and maturing quickly. In a couple weeks, Final Fantasy Tactics will be available for the iPhone/iPad.

I keep hearing that, and while I may have an iPhone one day (depends on a number of factors when my current contract runs out), but I like having the buttons for any real gaming. I'm sure it works well for some game types, though.

They've already said they're not looking at 3D for their next handheld, so I wouldn't count on it.

Perhaps. I don't think my suspicion is entirely unwarranted, though - I think we can agree that Sony considers the technological trojan horse to be a very significant strategy, and I see no reason they wouldn't add the functionality later through firmware updates.

Oh, it could be, I wouldn't write it off completely. But at least with the PS3 3D they're pushing it's also about selling the new TVs, where as on a handheld they don't have that same incentive.

For a second I thought you meant no 3D as in 2d games only and I was like RIGHT ON BRO but then I realized you were talking about visual depth 3d. I can't be the only one who was a gamer through the 3d gaming revolution and keeps mixing the two up.

I just wish that "2D" games weren't treated as inherently inferior to 3D games.

Well, they are, they just don't have the same level of depth.

That may be a deal breaker, honestly. Fix the nub, add a second one, and put them in the right god-damn spots. The placement of the analog nub on current PSPs is ridiculous to the point of it being nearly unusable.

Well, without the right screen, that would require that glasses be used... which even pro-3D people like me might find to be pretty fucking stupid with a handheld. It certainly wouldn't look good compared to it's main competitor.
