WeekEND gaming(7/2/10)- What are YOU playing?
And now a spiritual word from Father Gnome:
Dearly Beloved, we are gathered together here in the sign of the weekend – and in the face of this company – to join together these gamers and this weekend in holy matrimony, which is commended to be honorable among all gamers; and therefore – is not by any – to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly – but reverently, discreetly, advisedly and solemnly. Into this holy estate these two persons present now come to be joined. If any person can show just cause why there should not be any gaming done during the glorious days called the weekend – let them speak now or forever hold their peace. The weekend is the union of gamer and games and consoles/PCs in heart, body and mind. It is intended for their mutual joy – and for the help and comfort given on another in prosperity and adversity. But more importantly – it is a means through which a stable and loving environment may be attained. Through marriage, These weekend gamers and this weekend make a commitment together to face their disappointments – embrace their dreams (achievements, trophies , finished games, lessening the backlog) – realize their hopes – and accept each other’s failures (deaths, redos, restarts and checkpoints). These weekend gamers and weekend will promise one another to aspire to these ideals throughout their lives together(marathon gaming stopping only for food and drink) – through mutual understanding(weekend arrives, gaming continues) – openness – and sensitivity to each other. We are here today – before the gaming goddess – because marriage is one of Her most sacred wishes – to witness the joining in marriage of weekend gamers and the weekend. This occasion marks the celebration of love and commitment (love they games) with which this man and this woman begin their life together. And now – through me – He joins you together in one of the holiest bonds- weekend gaming. You may now grab your controller, turn on your console/PC and game until you can game no more. What I plan on celebrating with this weekend: Toy Story 3- In the grips of this game. Just when I think I can put it down, it shows off another cool item to use in the open world Toy box. Red Dead Redemption- Mission, missions and more missions. Or so I tell myself. MGS: Peace Walker- The game that is getting ignored but shouldn’t be. Rock Band- Some tunes maybe from the Fab 4 or I’ll dive more into the lego version. What I’m not playing is… Lego Harry Potter- I am sticking to my promise to finish what I’m playing. Father Gnome asks “What are YOU playing?”

Haven't really played NMH2 this week, I should put some hours into that. There is, of course, Transformers. I've been logging into WoW every day for a chance at the holiday pet, which I've had no luck with; also running a few BGs on my hunter now and then. Been playing quite a bit of Fallout 3, the game that keeps on giving. I don't even know how many times I've played through it at this point, I keep getting dragged back in every time I see a cool mod I'd like to try.
I keep looking at a Transformer I've been wanting (Animated Arcee), but I've been trying to fight the urge to buy it; A) I'd have to order it at an inflated price on eBay because I don't have a Toys'R'Us and B) I don't have the space to display the ones I currently have. I really need a whole shelf just for that shit, at this point. It doesn't help that I keep stopping by /toy/ even though I know they just encourage me to buy shit I don't need. Anyhow, that's the life of Heretic at the moment.

Is TS3 good? Well my rantings about it made Spiggles go out and buy it . Like I've stated before, I read a feature article on it a few months ago. The article made it seem like it was going to be different and it is. If you like platforming games, go for it. And if you like open world sandbox games even more to go for it. Well maybe when it goes on sale. I don't suggest to many games at full retail price. But fun? Hell yes. And even Spiggles said it's had some challenging moments so it's not a total cake walk. Quote:
![]() Well i'm doing a Spiggles today. I'm working my first double shift (yay!). I can at least be around here on the second shift more than I can on the first. I did bring my PSP though

![]() I'm on VACATION! Okay, so not for another 10 hours, but at 5pm today I'll be officially on vacation. We aren't planning anything major, but that's how I like my vacations to be. I don't like to stress about stuff while on vacation. I don't like to stress ANYTIME. We are going to the ocean at least one day this coming week with our son. I'm also going to be lounging at a relative's pool with beer and a book. Lobster feast on Sunday with the family (though I don't eat lobster myself), going to the fireworks that night. That's all I have planned so far. Besides gaming, and that should entail the following: Red Dead Redemption - I'll beat it either this weekend or coming week. Blur - I'll probably play a little of this And at least one of the following once I finish Red Dead: Ass Creed II Bioshock 2 Killzone Uncharted 2 3D Dot Game Heroes Divinity 2 Batman: AA Dead Space Just Cause 2 And probably a few other titles I have sitting around that I didn't mention. I'll probably only get to one new game, but I have a big list to choose from--my unplayed shelf is getting really really big. And hopefully my 360 Slim will be in next week, though I'm not holding my breath.

I also am going to continue to work on sorting out my books into must-haves, donate pile, and maybes. I need to get a couple Rubbermaid tubs from Wal-Mart this weekend. I hope I can get rid of a lot, but I know my hoarding tendency with books. It's hard.
If anyone wanted any books on here I would give them away for the price of shipping. I'll have to list what I have, which might be a bigger undertaking than I'm willing to do. Who knows. I'm doing all this so I can clean up the home office and get rid of some of my earthly possessions. We want to move a hutch into the office and free up some living area space, and since our house only has two walls that are big enough and without windows, one being the office, that's where we have to move it to. Since my wife doesn't like the bookcases, she doesn't want them back out in the living area. That's fine, they aren't the best anyway, just cheap things I put together. And I don't want them to ever tip over on my son anyway, which they are a bit wobbly when not loaded down like they are now with too many books. I'm also going to use the excuse to look at getting an e-reader, which Mags tells me not to do. I'm not going out right away to get one, but I'm entertaining the notion. Woot had a Kindle yesterday that sold out before I got to see it. In August the Kindle 3 is rumored to hit or at least be announced, so I might wait a bit to see what the future offers for these little devices. I don't think I would want to wait long enough for color e-ink to be created and put into these things, and I definitely do NOT want to pay for an iPad. So...we'll see. At the very least, it will be fun to see what I have. Last time I went through my books was when I was unpacking at our new house 13 months ago. It will be hard to get rid of a lot of them as I just haven't gotten around to reading many of them. Sorta like my backlog of games.

I need to do that with my books too, Kel. I used to have at least one room that was basically wall to wall bookshelves. I've gone from that down to one large and one small bookshelf. Sigh.
I don't want to part with most of my collection (same with my DVDs and games) but making that final decision to just purge... stuff... is difficult for a hoarder like me ![]() I'm working Sunday but otherwise have the weekend off after this afternoon. Time to get some gaming done! I kind of wish that I had just booked this shift off today because I am feeling incredibly superfluous here at work. Toy Story 3 (PS3) - Curse you, Purps. This game is far too addictive. I might try to blast through all of the story missions so that I can focus on the Toy Box mode. I might fire it up tonight and play with my son if he's good ![]() Alan Wake (360) - I should get back into this and try to wrap up Episode 4. I'm at what I assume is the midpoint of the episode. Dragon Quest V (DS) - I just finished up the first real 'quest' in the game today. I'm really digging the game (as I do most every DQ game) but my quandary is this. Do I wait until I finish DQV to pick up DQIX or do I get DQIX right away even though I've also got P3P coming next week and no real intention of playing DQIX until I finish up DQV... Arg! Bioshock 2 (PC) - I quite enjoy what I've played of this so far and will hopefully get some time in over the next couple of evenings to explore Rapture 2.0. RDR (PS3) - I might fire this up but it's kind of on the back burner right now. I just got to Mexico and that seems a fitting place to take a break while I work on a few other games. We'll see if that resolve lasts very long

It's hard to get rid of that stuff for me, as it feels like a piece of my history. The nostalgia factor is huge as well when I re-read them. I like to take a few old gaming magazines and read them on the can every year or so. Brings back the memories. That said, I tossed out a TON of them last year. But it was so long ago I forgot about it until now. So...it's not like they'll ever be truly missed--I only remember I have them when I stumble upon them in the closet every couple years it seems. If I could just get my wife to get rid of her old clothes instead of packing them into crates and putting them into the eaves of the house, we could thin down our useless possessions even more. I am also going to go through my wardrobe this week and donate my old clothes. I wear about 5% of what I own it seems. Much of it I've grown out of because of my wife's cooking, and though I always planned on getting back into those clothes it would probably be more realistic that I just buy new ones if I ever slim back down. I'm huge on trying to keep things spartan despite our possessions, and that's why I am trying to fix up the living room. One, that huge hutch feels out of place. Fucks up the feng-shui. If I don't like it in the office, I'll just sell it. Two, we bought a new sectional with couch, loveseat and chaisse lounge in October. Got it home and I realized it was too big for our space. It fits fine, but I don't like that it's so darn huge. I want to sell that now and get a more realistically sized set. I just don't like things looking...cramped.

A lot of things I've tried to justify keeping as I would pass them on to my son to read when he's a bit older, etc. It's harder to do that with some things, to be sure, especially when they've been sitting in a box untouched for several years. I finally tossed some auto show brochures that i picked up in 1993 at the Geneva Auto Show. Sigh. I did find the missing D&D module that I've been looking for for the last 3-4 years though, so that was nice.

I have books scattered about in various tubs after my clearing out and move few years ago. Fortunately I have not collected many since that move. One reason I am really thinking about an ereader myself is to avoid having to deal with keeping up with books. The other reason is I haven't been reading much and I think a shiny new electronic device will motivate me to read more. The instant access to books without having to leave my couch might.
As for games, I'm going to give Mass Effect 2 another go this weekend. |

People are talking about how the iPad will wind up crippling or killing dedicated ereaders, but I doubt it. One, iPads are $500 minimum. Two, they have an LCD screen which isn't as favorable as e-ink and no backlight. Three, they are $500 minimum. Four, they're heavier and not as easy to hold as an ereader. I would love to have a reader that had color ink, which would make comics and text books awesome to have. I've seen comics on the iPad via the Marvel app and I have to say they are gorgeous. But it's still cost prohibitive for me. I'm still on the fence, since the last thing I want to do is buy an ereader and wind up not using it as much as I hope. I'll never get rid of physical books entirely, but this could be a great supplimental item.

$50 readers would get people to jump on them like crazy. $150 is a bit steep for me right now, but it's certaintly starting to get my attention.

Scribblenauts showed up yesterday, kinda hoping I warm up to because just after the tutorial it seams kinda meh. Fragile Dreams hasn't showed up yet but I have my fingers crossed! Bioshock 2, which I want to start a new game of and rip those little irritations open like beer cans, set the bumpmapping on the card down for some reason but it made Fallout 3 run great currently so I'll live with it.

You crazy people, talking about getting rid of books. Generally my wife and I only get rid of books if we find we have duplicated hanging around. In fact, one of the big reasons we want to get a house some day is just so we can have enough room so we can have all of our books out, instead of packed up in boxes.
As for gaming, I'm still deep in my Patapon 2 addiction. I think I'm relatively close to the end of the game. I'm glad, since P3P comes out next week. That will assuredly be my next obsession. |

I might get a few rounds of Puzzle Quest 2 in while my GF is doing schoolwork in preparation for our trip next week to fucking Italy! I'm so psyched. Rome, Venice, Florence, and then my friend's wedding in the Tuscan countryside. Nine days.
I've spent a couple hours revisiting the cities in AC2, just noting the major churches and such so when I'm looking at them in person I can say, "Pshh...I climbed that, jumped from the roof and stuck a dude in the fucking throat. Next!" My GF will likely look at me, roll her eyes, and continue eating her gelato in silence.

It doesn't help that I have this crippling comic addiction either. Every week or two I bring in a bag of new comics and graphic novels that needs to be stored somewhere. Sigh. It's funny. Over the past few years I've been reading a lot but novels and 'real' books are taking a back seat to all of the graphic novels and comics that I've been devouring. I'm not sure why, but probably because I can whip through a GN or comic in a fraction of the time it takes me to read a novel, at least since I had kids and got busier at work. I used to read at least one novel a week but ever since I had kids that number has decreased significantly. Sigh again... Quote:
