Game You Already Played Coming to System You Already Own

I think that headline says it all, but here's a bit more. It looks like Square Enix is bringing Final Fantasy 7 to Steam, complete with Achievements, cloud saves and a new "character booster" function. All of this info comes from a, since locked down, website which is owned by Square Enix. So for now this appears legit, and not a really advanced hoax.

While opinions on it's actual greatness is up for debate, Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most popular and widely known games of all time. For many fans it was their introduction to RPGs, and is still beloved by many gamers. It sounds like there won't be a ton of updates or changes here, other than the achievements and the character booster, which lets you "increase your HP, MP and Gil levels to their maximum, all with the simple click of a button" to help get you past particularly difficult battles.

No date was revealed, and so far Square Enix isn't commenting on it, but the site lists a price of £7.99 / €9.99 (about $12.50).

The booster sounds a bit stupid , but otherwise this would be nice. Not sure I'd buy it, but it'd be nice.

It's Aeris, not Cloud that needs saving.

PathMaster 06-21-2012 10:16 AM

Played the original on PC actually.

Smart move on their part. Good price point as well. Never played, but I've been curious about it.

Of course, any Final Fantasy that isn't 2D is one I haven't played ;)

I haven't played it. Then again I haven't had much interest in doing so, either. I must be the only gay gamer who isn't in love with Final Fantasy.

Hopefully they update the graphics a bit. At least run them through some filters as any decent emulator would do.

I'm sol-THIRTEEN DOLLARS?

Final Fantasy 7 has a very dedicated PC modding community that has done some fantastic work patching in higher-res models and music. If you're going to play on the PC, I recommend checking that out.

Whoa. I missed that line the first time. Now everybody else in the library wants to find out what's so damn funny that I had to ruin the silence.

It's true. Most of the gay gamers I know are really into Final Fantasy and/or World of Warcraft.

Not all of them, though. A good friend of mine is more of a Portal and Minecraft kind of guy. Too bad he's taken... :p

I know FF VII and FF VIII data has been in Steam's system for some time now. Good to see a release finally in sight, maybe? I dunno... do I really want to buy it for the fourth time?

Doogie2K 06-21-2012 11:50 AM

I've never played FF7. Should I turn in my gamer card at the door?

I LOL'd at both this and the news title.

Wasn't that completely broken? I seem to remember a game ending bug being reported with that in certain scenarios about 3/4 of the way through the game.

For me it was broken but not completely. I was able to finish it but late in the game it crashed constantly so I just pushed my way through to finish it.

I also first played it on the PC, with a system that could barely handle it. I have fond memories of staying up until 2 AM squinting at a 320x240 window on my little CRT monitor. I kind of wish I still had the discs but I sold them back in high school.

"Character Booster" sounds like bullshit though. Who builds in a win button?

Only if you were a Playstation owner between the ages of 12 and 25 in 1998, but that card would have long since expired anyway.

This is eerily convenient, as I'm about to wrap up Final Fantasy V and move on to FF6 (yes, I mix numerals). Hopefully this will be out by then.

Why? BECAUSE ACHIEVEMENTS.
