Cinematic Trailer for Torchlight 2 Drops

As we get closer to the release of Torchlight 2 we're starting to get more goodies. So take a few minutes from the open beta of that other ARPG and watch this trailer, I promise it's worth your time.

PathMaster 04-20-2012 01:50 PM

I like the art style of that trailer. First one was fun for a bit, hopefully the second can expand upon the fun.

Voodoo 04-20-2012 01:56 PM

Hell. Yes.

Lekon 04-20-2012 01:57 PM

Rather snazzy art style indeed. Makes me think of Samurai Jack.

That's what I thought as well.

Didn't they announce they weren't going to beat D3 to market?

No amount of cool videos is going to recoup them from that mistake. No offense intended, and I'm still confident of the game's quality, but I just can't get over how bad a move that is.

Ghostbear 04-20-2012 02:25 PM

I'd like to see a link to them announcing that.

Narradisall 04-20-2012 02:25 PM

Meh. I'm sorry, but D3 is going to likely crush this no matter how much swooning goes on prior to it's launch.

I'll admit, the only thing that put me off the original was it being single player, which is now fixed in the sequel, but it really didn't draw me in as a game, and I found myself bored and forcing myself through to the end.

I'll be interested to see how it does, but I'm not confident it'll fair well.

For scale.

Nevermind...

The first game did pretty well on Steam and XBL. On XBL it is the best selling XBLA title to date. It didn't do Diablo numbers, but does it really need to in order to be considered a viable and worthwhile purchase?

It will only cost $20, has 8 player co-op, will not require a constant internet connection and it will likely be as fun as Diablo. Trust me I'm getting both games, I think there is room for them to exist in the same space.

T2 will "ideally" release about a month ofter D3.

Here's the one big question everyone is directing at Runic Games CEO Max Schaefer about Torchlight 2: When is it launching?

"Well, I'm sure you've noticed Diablo has announced a date. So, we don't want to fall right on that," Schaefer said when we met at PAX East today. "The real answer is when [Torchlight 2] is finished, is Diablo 3 right now [owning the conversation]? Then we'll wait."

Schaefer said the launch date will "ideally" be shortly after the one occupied by Diablo -- and optimistically it'll be a month later.
I'm not knocking the game, I loved Torchlight. I just hate to see them hamstring themselves by stepping right in front of the D3 freight train. At the very least it will likely hurt their sales until people get tired of D3 and start looking around for alternatives.

Narradisall 04-20-2012 02:47 PM

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I'm not saying it won't sell well, but I can see many people picking D3 over it. Im sure it'll pull in good sales figures and recoup its money, but the release time sucks, and it'll get crushed under the amount of people playing D3 instead of it.

There's few dungeon crawlers like this (of good caliber) about, so there is space for them to both exist, but man the timing sucks for T2. I'm sure they didn't have much choice in the matter, but the release timing isn't going to favour them.

Right, but they didn't say it would launch before Diablo, other than maybe some joking because of Blizzard's normal dev cycles.

Errr, I know. They are saying that it won't launch before Diablo. Which is what I was saying. D3 will come out first, and then T2 is going to release in it's wake.

What the hell is an ARPG? I don't concider clicking on things rapidly to really constitute Action, so...

Xerxes 04-20-2012 04:26 PM

Coming out after Diablo 3 is probably for the best. Hell, add in another month to let folks get that out of their systems.

You've never played Diablo 2, have you?

violent 04-20-2012 04:43 PM

We get Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3 in the same year. Considering the last quality franchise that has come out of this genre was Titan Quest so many years ago, people should stop giving a fuck about which game is going to be superior and enjoy the rare abundance of options us fans of this game genre have been presented with.

Grifter 04-20-2012 04:54 PM

The only way I was able to enjoy Torchlight is if I had something else to do while playing, like watching a movie/TV or listening to a podcast. I found that just playing Torchlight by itself was immensely boring and I still loath the graphic style. After spending some more time with D3 today I think I'll be skipping TL2. I'm sure between D3 and Path of Exile I'll have no problem getting my ARPG fix filled over the next year at which point Grim Dawn should be out.

I doubt going with a Flash style cinematic was an artistic decision but more of a financial decision and possibly time frame one as well.
