I just finished reading Tom Rob Smith's, Child 44.
This is Tom Rob Smith's first novel and an excellent one at that. The story takes place in the early 1950s in Soviet Russia. The main plot is about a serial killer and how Stalinist Russia behaved when confronted with such a thing. The state proves to be every bit as menacing, if not more so than the killer himself/herself.
