I hope you'll shrug off the ire of those who don't handle being out-argued well, and return.

    A legal question:

Can the Supreme Court declare a law unconstitutional if it hasn't taken effect yet?

I feel a little dirty. I think I've seen you deliver more spankings by now than a naughty Google image search, and I've enjoyed every bit.

Hey Ox? Being a lawyer and stuff, how do you find the Ace Attorney games to play? (If you've played them)

Prompted by our differences in that Wisconsin thread, I began to think about the first Difference between us, the reason we seem to clash so commonly on issues of P & R: you are a lawyer, and I — if I had to pick a word for myself, disregarding ability or achievement and going by the classic definition — I am a poet. Our meeting could set the stage for many jokes, and we might have a hard time understanding one another, speaking entirely different tongues; but that does not stop me from enjoying the back and forth immensely or from appreciating your obvious intellect and erudition. I tip my hat to you, sir: I learn from every disagreement.

Hey, President Obama! You're the last person to do something on the plane until the next round begins!

I have a legal question: If I wish you a Happy Birthday, and you don't have a Happy one, am I liable?

Can you do me a favor? I have a question for you, and if you're online at present that would be a lot of help.

I considered making this a thread, but it's more in the "personal observation" category than anything anyone will actually care about discussing.

So, I happen to coach a local high school's mock-trial team in my copious free time. It's an interesting and rewarding (albeit often frustrating) experience for me. What's always striking to me is the vast gulf between my perspective and those of my students.

You see, the students I teach might delicately be referred...

So, I decided to walk home from work today. Halfway home, a disheveled fellow stops and asks me for directions. He then says, "Are you a cop?" He goes on to explain that he needs a subway token because he's delivering a pound of marijuana to a drug sale, and tells me where the sale will be conducted.

A guy provides a summary of the news from the Wall Street Journal for the corresponding day in 1930. Read his "Socratic monologue" for an explanation of why he's doing it. I knew about the 1930 rally and the fact that Hoover et al. are (somewhat) unfairly maligned, but it's pretty interesting to see how the actual information they had to work with was so mixed.

I don't think it's quite as applicable to today as he does, but it does sound a cautionary note that hindsight...

As part of a recurring series here, I give you this.

When asked to sign a form that she understood her rights, Cofield said, "I'm not signing anything, because when it comes down to the bottom line, who's smarter — me or you? We'll figure it out, won't we?"
Yes, Your Honor. Yes, we will.
