The PS2 has been the most successful home console EVER. Sony had a choice to leverage that platform to help their new PS3, or milk it as long as possible. By choosing to milk the PS2 sales as long as they can, they reduce the incentive to make the switch to a PS3. They also make it 'easier' to switch to another platform.
Lets say you own a PS2, and have a large library of games. When it comes time to purchase a new console, none of the available options leverage your existing library...
