From the twisted mind of arguably the most annoying (but loveable) poster on the internet comes an equally twisted view of reality--with the occasional dumb joke.

(Good) Fanfic Featurette: Fic Harder

The Elder Scrolls has a massive amount of fanfiction floating around. It's one of the biggest non-anime sources of fanfic inspiration, and has a surprising number of good fics. And one of them is my new favorite.

434: The Last Year of the Third Era is not your usual fic. It doesn't follow the PC, nor does it tell the story of an OC, nor does it follow the story of anyone who has much of an impact on the game itself. This is the story of several MINOR characters you meet in TES4: Oblivion...

I remember Golden Sun fondly (the 3DS sequel less so)--the music, the adventure, the solid gameplay. Sadly, the world and characters were a tad bland, so it's understandable that I didn't expect to find any good fanfics that could flesh them out well.

That all changed when I read Unleash the Fury of the Djinn, a rather hilarious, yet gripping original story.

Basically, it takes place not long after the events of both games when a new baddie with the power to nullify...

(Good) Fanfic Featurette: The Quickening

Like Highlander? Like Rurouni Kenshin?

If you're awesome, the answer to both questions is, "yes." If not, please leave until you find some means of filling the gaping void within your soul.

Swordsmen, being awesome, combines the two in a brilliant crossover, with good ol' Kenshin Himura as an immortal. The events coincide with the '90s TV series rather than the movie, though, so even though watching the series isn't exactly REQUIRED to understand this fic,...

(Good) Fanfic Featurette III

I've always hated shipping fics. Half the reason people ignore good fanfics like the ones I review is because of all the horrifically written romantic/smut one-shots.

However, I'm definitely not alone in this, as our own Akion-Totocha demonstrated to me by introducing me to a merciless parody of shipping fics, appropriately called A Cliche Title.

It basically mocks every badly-written romantic one-shot, and it's darn good at it. Kind of like those Penny Arcade strips...

I'm back from sifting through the Mary Sues, sex scenes and self-inserts on the web to bring you the best in amateur writers who, for some reason, decided to do fanfic. This time? Metroid.

I've always appreciated novelization fics, mainly because they're tricky to write. Magus523 more or less made his name on them.

His early fics were hit-and-miss, but there was still a sign of a good writer in them. IMO it was not until he started on Metroid IV: Alone in the Stars...
