Random battles in RPGs exist as a timesink so you don't realize how stupid everything that's going on is.

Think about it. For the most part, every single part of an RPG is a huge melodramatic story bit - things that could be the best part of a movie all by themselves - climb the tower to kill the demon, escape from the military base, defend the castle from an army of ninjas, dive into a cave to retrieve a mysterious artifact.
